ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop scored four second half goals to earn a 5-0 victory over Brevard College, Sunday evening at Eagle Field in non-conference action.
Junior
Jordan Stoddart scored the first two goals of the match to help the Eagles improve to 5-2 on the year while Brevard College falls to 2-4-1.
Stoddart's second of the match came in the 52
nd minute as he scored his second goal off his head. The Eagles earned a corner kick and senior
Pol Sole delivered a perfect service to Stoddart, who was open at the back post and beat the keeper to the lower right corner of the goal.
Winthrop's lead remained 2-0 until pulling away in the final 15 minute so the match. Freshman
Kento Ito had subbed into the game in the 73
rd minute and in the 76
th minute scored his first collegiate goal. Ito crashed the net as
Sean Comer ripped a shot that was saved right to Ito as his first touch found the back of the net.
Sal Perez and
Nick Nova each scored their first collegiate goals to make it 5-0. Perez converted a penalty kick in the 79
th minute after he had let a shot go seconds prior that was blocked by a defenders hand. Nova netted his goal in the 87
th minute as he won the ball on a tackle, dribbled toward the middle of the field at the edge of the box and bent the ball to the far right corner of the frame for the goal.
The Eagles led 1-0 at the break as Stoddart scored his third goal of the season. The junior forward subbed into the match at the 27
th minute and gave the Eagles the lead in the 36
th minute when he headed home a
Cody Winter free kick. Stoddart made a run toward the middle of the goal about eight yards out and flicked the ball past goalkeeper Heath Turner.
Winthrop ended the game with a 34-4 advantage in shots with 18 shots on goal.
Hector Fernandez made one save as he held the Tornados scoreless for 78 minutes and 48 seconds before subbing out of the match. He is now 2-0 on the year.
Winthrop will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 23 when it hosts East Tennessee State at 6 p.m.
