Men's Soccer Hosts Brevard College Sunday Evening

Eagles Looking For 5th Win Of The Season

ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop men's soccer team will be back in action Sunday evening at 6 p.m. when it welcomes Brevard College to Eagle Field.

Winthrop is 4-2 on the year and looking for back-to-back victories as it hosts its third of six straight home games.

Winthrop is coming off a season-high five goals in its win over USC Upstate on Wednesday. There were five different goal scorers as junior Jordan Stoddart ended up with the game-winner in the 79th minute after the Eagles trailed twice in the match (2-1 and 3-2).

Junior Jordi Lluch picked up a playmaker against the Spartans and became the first Winthrop player to record three assists in a game since David Kenga did it on Sept. 23, 2006 against Liberty. It's the first time a center back has had three assists since David Garry had three in a win over Georgia Southern on Oct. 26, 2005.

Mangus Thorsson, Pol Sole, Charles Coulson and Stoddart all lead the team with two goals each as the Eagles are averaging 1.83 goals per game, ranking them 39th in the country.

Defensively the Eagles have given up six goals in the last two games and are now down to their third goalie, Hector Fernandez, with field player Sean Comer to be the backup goalie in case it's needed. Fabian Broich is still out with a knee injury and Guilherme Avelar left Wednesday's game at halftime after an Upstate player collided with him in the closing seconds of the first half. Fernandez earned the win in net as he allowed one goal and made one save in the second half against the Spartans.

The Tornados enter the game at 2-3-1 on the year and are coming off a 5-0 loss to Queens. This won't be Brevard's first trip to Eagle Field this season as last Tuesday they squared off against UNC Pembroke and played to a 3-3 tie.

Brevard is averaging 1.5 goals per game led by Sergi Monso with three goals and an assist. Robert Ferrer and Jesse Omezi each have two goals on the year as well. Starting all six games in goal for the Tornados has been Heath Turner, who has a 2.18 goals against average and is 2-3 on the year.

Winthrop is 10-0 all-time against Brevard, having earned shutouts in three of the last four contests.
