ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop women's soccer team looks to carry its winning momentum into its mid-week match-up against Charlotte on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Transamerica Field. Despite the close proximity, this will be the first time the two schools have met during the regular season.
The Lady Eagles (2-2) will be extremely rested, having not played in 11 days after Friday night's contest against Wofford was cancelled due to severe thunderstorms. The Lady Eagles' offense led by seniors
Krystyna Freda and
Devin Puckett is currently ranked first in the country in scoring offense, nabbing 4.75 points a game. Despite only playing two games thus far, Freda tops both the team and the conference in goals (7) and is ranked seventh in the nation in points (17) while Puckett currently ranks 2
nd in the conference in points per game (1.75) and 3
rd in the conference in goals per game (.75). Winthrop has a total 57 points, first in the conference, 16 points ahead of Gardner Webb.
The 49ers (1-3-1) are trying to get back to winning form as they have gone 0-3-1 in their last four games, although they have not lost a game by more than two goals. The young Charlotte team is led by freshman Martha Thomas and sophomore Perri Bonner who have scored four of the 49ers' five goals. Charlotte's defense will be difficult for Winthrop to break down as it has given up an average of just 1.46 per game. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Annika McHenry has played all five games for the 49ers and tallied 31 saves.
Head coach John Cullen is in his sixth year at Charlotte, where he has earned an overall record of 60-33-11.
