BOILING SPRINGS, NC—
Winthrop netted two goals by freshmen in the second half to earn a 3-1 victory over Georgia Southern, Sunday afternoon in men's soccer action at the Big South/SoCON Challenge.

The victory gave the Eagles a 2-0 start for the second straight season. Georgia Southern falls to 1-1 on the year.

This is the third time in four years that we've won this Big South/SoCON Challenge," said Winthrop head coach Rich Posipanko, who captured his 370th career win. "I thought we played very well and worked very hard among some hot conditions. Felt we had a lot of guys put in some good work."

Winthrop held a 1-0 lead after 45 minutes before Georgia Southern tied the match in the 70th minute as Jeremy Rector converted a penalty. At that time freshman Charles Coulson entered the match as a sub and 52 seconds later scored his first collegiate goal, which turned out to be the game-winner. Coulson was set up behind the GSU defense on a through ball from Magnus Thorsson and Coulson calmly slotted the ball past Jack Falle for the goal.

Freshman Sam Schmidt added an insurance goal in the 79th minute for Winthrop when he worked his way past the keeper and curled in a shot for his first collegiate goal.

Winthrop began the game applying a ton of pressure offensively as it tested Falle early and often. The Eagles managed seven shots and three corners in the first 15:11 of the match. The pressure eventually paid off when Jordan Stoddart was fouled in the box and Winthrop was awarded a penalty. Pol Sole converted the penalty for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.

The game was nearly 2-0 in favor of the Eagles in the 32nd minute as Sean Comer ripped a shot that hit the post, worked its way across the goal mouth connecting with the other post and then bouncing out.

Offensively the Eagles applied pressure all afternoon as they finished with a 26-7 advantage in shots and 9-2 advantage in corners. It was the first time since Aug. 24, 2012 vs. Brevard College that Winthrop had that many shots in a non-conference game.

Junior Fabian Broich earned the win in net for Winthrop as he finished with two saves. Falle suffered the loss in goal for Georgia Southern has he finished with nine saves.

Jordi Lluch was named to the Big South/SoCON All-Tournament Team and the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Lluch was joined on the all-tournament by Stoddart, Thorsson and Patrick Barnes.

Winthrop will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. when it takes on Elon in the opening game of the UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Classic in Wilmington, NC.
