ROCK HILL, SC—
Winthrop softball closed out its Big South Conference regular season action of 2014 with a 7-0 loss to Coastal Carolina, Sunday afternoon at Terry Field.

Winthrop falls to 26-24 overall and finishes league play with a 12-12 mark. Coastal is now 38-14 overall and 20-4 as it captures the regular seasons series with the Eagles with a sweep for the third straight season.

The regular season will come to a close for the Eagles on Tuesday when it hosts Charlotte at 5 p.m. in a doubleheader before the team dives into final exams on Wednesday.

Eagle starter Sara Allen ran into some trouble in the second innings as Coastal Carolina pushed three runs across. It started with a single through the hole at first by Jessie Winans and Brooke Donovan tried to go from first to third so right fielder Megan Winningham came up throwing. The ball short hopped Kelsey Ritter and third base and got away, allowing Donovan to score and Winans to move to second. After striking out the next batter for the second out, Allen walked the next batter and then hit the following batter to load the bases. Kiana Quolas singled through the hole at short to make it 2-0 and then Allen walked Morgan Noad to make it 3-0. Winthrop got out of the jam as a pitch to the next batter got away from Holli Ryan at home plate as the runners took off running. Ryan collected the ball and dove toward the runner to make the tag before Bri Chuisano could slide into home.

Coastal loaded the bases again in the third inning and eventually made it 4-0 as Maicie Hahn drew a walk to plate Kory Hayden. The Chanticleers added three more in the fifth highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Jessie Winans.

Quolas kept the Eagle hitters off balance all afternoon as she tossed a complete game allowing just three hits with a walk and two strikeouts to improve to 24-5 on the year. Quolas kept the Eagles hitless threw 3.2 innings until McKenzi Corn singled up the middle for the first hit.

Allen suffered the loss for Winthrop and is now 12-11 after allowing three runs on three hits with three walks and a strikeout in two innings of work.

Corn's single gave her 15 straight games reaching base in Big South play while Alex White's lone hit was a double in the seventh for her 13th double-bagger of the season.
