Baseball Sweeps VMI, Takes Final Game 3-2

Box Score ROCK HILL, SC- T. J. Olesczuk scored the go ahead run to lift the Winthrop baseball team past VMI 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at The Winthrop Ballpark. The last time the Eagles swept a conference series was against High Point in the 2011 season. With the win, Winthrop improves to 21-26 and 12-9 in conference action while VMI drops to 22-19 and 9-12 in conference match-ups.

Joey Strain registered the win for the Eagles, giving up two runs on three hits after coming in to relieve starter Josh Strong who held VMI to just three hits in six innings. VMI's Rian Ellis took the loss, giving up two runs on two hits.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as John Menken scored on an RBI single by Babe Thomas. The Keydets battled back to tie the game in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Brandon Angus.

Cody Dolan led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Olesczuk then stepped up and brought Dolan home with his 17th double of the year. Olesczuk advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the game winner on a single by Thomas.

VMI's Will Malbon tacked one more, scoring from third on a wild pitch but the Eagles' defense held on to the win.

Winthrop will host the Davidson Wildcats on Tuesday night at 5:00 p.m. at The Winthrop Ballpark.
