Three Run Fifth Inning Pushes Baseball Past VMI 6-3

Box Score ROCK HILL, SC- A three run seventh inning pushed the Winthrop baseball team past VMI 6-3 on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles are now 20-26 on the season and 11-9 in Big South play while the Keydets fall to 22-18 and 9-11 in conference action.

Travis Shelley came in as relief in the seventh inning and picked up the win, holding VMI to just one hit. VMI's Rian Ellis takes the loss, giving up two runs on two hits while five other Keydet's pitchers combined to give up four runs on eleven hits.

After four scoreless innings, VMI took a two run lead in the top of the fifth inning. The Eagles cut the lead as Kyle Edwards hammered his first collegiate home run to make it 2-1.
The Eagles took back the lead in the sixth inning as Cody Dolan and John Menken crossed the plate but the Keydets tied it up with an RBI single by John Tarsovich heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Edwards led off with a single and was followed by a successful bunt by Leighton Daniels. Dolan reached on fielder's choice that advanced Daniels to second while Edwards was thrown out third. Daniel's scored the go-ahead run as Dolan advanced to third on a single by T.J. Olesczuk. Babe Thomas then walked to load the bases, and Dolan scored on a single by Menken while Olesczuk was thrown out at home. Thomas made the final 6-3 as he crossed the plate on a wild pitch. 

The Eagles will play the final game of the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at The Winthrop Ballpark.
