Baseball Team Falls To No. 15 Clemson 4-2 As Rally Falls Short

CLEMSON, SC- The Winthrop baseball team came up a bit short on Wednesday night as it dropped a 4-2  decision to No. 15 Clemson on the road. The Eagles' record falls  to 13-17 on the season while the Tigers improve to 19-9.

Zach Sightler took the loss on the mound to even his record at  2-2 this season.  He pitched four scoreless innings before giving up all four runs on five hits in the fifth inning. Clemson's Clate Schmidt earned the win for the Tigers, giving up one run on four hits.

Winthrop's first run came in the sixth inning as Leighton Daniels came home on an RBI single by John Menken. Daniels led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a groundout by Michael Patrick. The Eagles threatended in the ninth inning, as they loaded the bases before Chad Smith scored when the Clemson catcher dropped the ball on a tag play at the plate. Tiger reliever Matt Campbell struck out the last two hitters with the tying run on second to get the save.

Zac Goodno led Winthrop at the plate as he had two of Winthrop's seven hits.

Clemson's four runs in the fifth inning, after Chris Okey reached on a throwing error and Steve Wilkerson moved him over to third with a double. Shane Kennedy hit a sacrifice fly to score Okey and Wilkerson came home on a single. Weston Wilson drew a walk and advanced to second on a single from Tyler Slaton. Both runners scored  RBI single from Tyler Kreiger.

The Eagles return home this weekend to host Radford in a three-game Big South series at The Winthrop Ballpark. Winthrop is looking to win capture its fourth straight conference series. Games are scheduled for Friday at 6:00 p.m., Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
