ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team will continue its conference schedule this weekend with a road game at Campbell Friday before hosting High Point Sunday.
The Eagles enter the weekend in search of their first conference victory after dropping the first two contests. Winthrop currently sits at 3-9 overall.
Junior Jenna Kasmarik continues to lead the team and the Big South in total goals with 37 and is fourth in the conference in total points with 38. Sophomore Danielle Ellis leads the team and is sixth in the conference with 14 assists. Sophomore goalie Camille King is fourth in the conference in saves per game and is second in ground balls per game.
Winthrop heads to Buises Creek, NC for a 3 p.m. contest Friday against the Campbell Camels. Campbell is currently 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Camels are coming off a 14-7 loss to Davidson on Tuesday. Last season the Eagles defeated Campbell 15-10 at Eagle Field.
Campbell has been led offensively this year by sophomore Loren Day who is second in the league in total goals with 33and total points with 43, but did not play in the Camels' loss Tuesday to Davidson. Senior Brittany Kincher has started all 10 games for the Camels in net and sports a .419 save percentage while allowing just shy of 12 goals per game this season.
Sunday afternoon the Eagles will host the reigning Big South champions, High Point, in a 1 p.m. contest at Eagle Field. The Panthers enter the weekend with a 6-5 overall record and a 2-0 mark in the Big South and will play at Liberty on Friday. High Point has defeated Coastal Carolina and Presbyterian in conference this year by a combined score of 34-8.
Alex Perry and Mackenzie Carroll lead the Panthers offensively with 19 and 18 goals respectively. Carroll also leads the team in total points with 36 as she has added 18 assists this season. Julia Burns has started all 11 games in goal for the Panthers, allowing 8.49 goals per game while making 6.8 saves per contest.
Following Sunday's contest the Eagles will stay at home for their next conference matchup against the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina. The teams will meet Saturday, April 19 at 6 p.m. at Eagle Field.
