Baseball Ends Trip to Nashville with a 4-1 Loss to Vanderbilt

- Despite right handed pitcher Josh Strong pitching six scoreless innings, the Winthrop baseball team dropped the final game of its weekend series with Vanderbilt 4-1.

The loss was the Eagles' sixth in a row, bringing their season record to 6-9 as the Commodores continue their winning streak while improving to 15-2 on the year.

Strong pitched 7.1 innings, giving up three runs on just six hits while taking the loss and dropping to 0-3 on the year. Jason Driver came in to close in the eighth and gave up one run on two hits. Vanderbilt's Tyler Ferguson gave up one run on seven hits in seven innings and earned the win.  

Vanderbilt went up 2-0 in the fifth inning with runs from Rhett Wiseman and Vince Conde who both hit singles.  Wiseman scored after Chris Harvey reached on fielder's choice and advanced to second off a throwing error from Chad Smith. Conde came home on the next play, a flyout to left field from Kyle Smith.  

Winthrop cut the lead to just one in the seventh, on a run from John Menken who scored off a wild pitch from Ferguson. Menken hit a double to left field and advanced to third on a throwing error from Ferguson.

Vanderbilt tacked on two more in the eighth with an RBI single from Bryan Reynolds that brought John Norwood home and a flyout from Zander Wiel that allowed Dansby Swanson to score.

The Eagles return home to face Wofford on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m.
