Eagle Lacrosse Falls To Jacksonville Saturday in Non-Conference Finale

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought contest 19-11 to the Jacksonville University Dolphins Saturday at Eagle Field in the team's final non-conference contest.

Winthrop (3-7) and Jacksonville (7-3) battled back and forth through the first six minutes.  The Dolphins went up 1-0 and Danielle Ellis scored her fifth of the season to the tie the game just under three minutes into the contest.  Jacksonville went back up 2-1 less than a minute later but Abigail Blevins tied the game with 24:20 on the clock. 

Jacksonville then rattled off four straight goals to go up 6-2 with 13:27 left in the half.  Winthrop then started to get a little momentum back with back-to-back goals from Abigail Blevins and Krista Frowein to get within 6-4.  After another Dolphin tally, Hayley Krause netted her first of the game to make the score 7-5. 

The Dolphins responded from the Winthrop run with four unanswered goals and six of the last seven of the half.  Winthrop's goal came from the stick of Hayley Krause and the Eagles trailed 13-6 at the break.

Winthrop came out strong to start the second half, netting two goals in the first five minutes, one each from Logan McCarthy and Mary Accomando.  The Dolphins then scored four unanswered to go up 17-8 with 16:17 remaining.

As torrential rain started the fall, Winthrop was able to pull two goals back, one from Shannon Gallagher and one from Danielle Ellis.  Jacksonville scored twice more over the last 10 minutes and Logan McCarthy got her second of the game with 33 seconds left to reach the final score of 19-11.

For the Eagles, McCarthy, Blevins, Ellis and Krause each tallied two goals while Frowein and Gallagher each had one goal and one assist.  Gallagher also had four draw controls and seven caused turnovers.  Jesse Filyaw-Hiu, making her first collegiate start, recorded seven saves. 

Winthrop will return to the field on Friday in its first conference contest of the season at Davidson at 7 p.m.
