ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop baseball team exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning to defeat North Carolina A&T 8-2
on Tuesday at The Winthrop Ballpark. The win improves the Eagles to 9-11 while the Aggies fall to 8-11.
Sophomore
Stephen Wallace led the Eagles' rally with a bases clearing double that put Winthrop ahead 4-1. He finished the night with two of Winthrop's seven hits and he scored one run.
Right handed pitcher
Jason Driver started and pitched five innings of one-hit baseball and gave up one run to earn the win and improve his record to 2-1. Southpaw DarAmani Swift took the loss for the Aggies, falling to 1-2 as he gave up three runs on four hits.
The Aggies took the lead in the fourth inning when Brandon Wilkerson scored from third on a sacrifice fly from Cameron Jergens.
The fifth inning rally started when
Leighton Daniels scored the tying run for the Eagles after coming home on a bases load walk.. Wallace then came through with his three-RBI double that brought
Mark Lowrie,
John Menken and
Chad Smith home to give Winthrop a 4-1 lead. Wallace later scored from second on an RBI single by
Clay Altman.
Zac Goodno followed with a single and then
Kyle Edwards doubled to score Altman and send Goodno to third. Daniels came up to bat for the second time in the inning against A&T reliever Kirby Whicker who uncorked a wild pitch on ball four that allowed Goodno to score. Edwards advanced to third and then scored the final run of the inning when Smith reached on an error by the center fielder.
The Aggies added their final run in the ninth when Ryan Hill scored on a passed ball.
The Eagles will have less than a day to rest as they take on The Citadel
Wednesday night at The Winthrop Ballpark at
6:00 p.m.
