Kyle Edwards had the game-winning RBI and
Sam Kmiec pitched a complete game as the Winthrop baseball team opened up conference play with a 3-2 win over Gardner-Webb to snap a seven game losing streak in the Big South opener on Friday night.
The Eagles are 7-10 and 1-0 in the Big South while Gardner-Webb falls to 6-11 and 0-1 in conference play.
Kmiec, a sophomore southpaw, struck out 13 batters and walked just two. He allowed one earned run and just four hits in his 9.0 innings of work and improve his record to 2-1. . Right handed pitcher Matt Fraudin took the loss for the Bulldogs, pitching seven innings and giving up three runs on five hits.
The Bulldogs went up early, as JJ Nazzaro scored from third off a RBI single from Scott Coleman. The Eagles took the lead back in the fifth, when
Chad Smith and
Zac Goodno scored on an RBI double from Brad Kazcka. Smith had singled and advanced to second as Goodno reached on a throwing error with both advancing on a ground out by Edwards.
Nazzaro would score again in the sixth inning on a passed ball to even the score at 2-2.
John Menken then scored what proved to be the game-winner in the seventh inning after singling to right center, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Smith and coming home on Edwards' single.
The Eagles continue their weekend series at Gardner-Webb with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the second game beginning 30 minutes later.
