ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop softball has won four straight as it picked up a 9-1 win over Cleveland State and a 3-0 win over Wagner, Saturday at the Combat Invitational.
Winthrop's offense came alive as it totaled 12 runs on 19 hits on the day with seven extra base hits as it improves to 7-10.
The Eagles started the day with a walk-off grand slam to enforce the mercy rule as they won 9-1 in six innings.
Maddie Antone doubled to lead off the inning and then Paige Hartfield took over at second as a pinch-runner.
Kim Ryder followed with a single to second base and then
Zharne Glover walked to load the bases.
Naomi Stevens made it 5-1 with a sacrifice fly that plated Hartfield and Ryder and Glover moved over. With two outs,
Alex White walked and then Andrea came up and drilled the ball over the left field fence.
Sarah Allen tossed a complete game allowing one unearned run on three hits with no walks and five strikeouts in six innings as she is now 2-4 on the year and has not allowed an earned run the last two starts.
"We played terrific all weekend," said Winthrop head coach
Mark Cooke. "Today we just hit the ball and ran the bases well. We had big contributions from several different players. Our defense was really terrific all weekend. We got great pitching from Sarah and
Dallas King. It was a team effort, we played together."
Winthrop trails Cleveland State (6-6) 1-0 heading into the third inning when it exploded for four runs. White singled to center with one out to get the inning going offensively.
Leah Young pinch-ran for White and then Andrea followed with a single to left.
Kelsey Ritter stepped in and ripped a double to center, scoring both Young and White for a 2-1 lead. Two batters later Antone stepped in and homered to center field, her second homer in two days.
In the nightcap against Wagner (2-5), King tossed a complete game seven-inning shutout as she allowed just four hits with two walks and five strikeouts to improve to 2-2 on the year.
McKaleigh Goodale also tossed a complete game as the Eagles were able to manufacture a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to provide enough offense for King.
The eventual game-winning run in the fourth came courtesy of a double off the bat of Andrea. White led off the inning with a double to center before Andrea ripped one to center for her fifth RBI on the day.
In the sixth, the Eagles got a couple of insurance runs as Corn led off the inning with a triple and then scored on an error. Ritter came through again two batters later as she singled to left, scoring White.
Andrea finished with four hits, two runs and five RBI on the day while Corn and Ryder each had three hits.
Winthrop will be back in action next weekend as it hosts the Winthrop/adidas Invitational beginning Friday, Mar. 7 at 3 p.m. against Marist and Connecticut at 5 p.m.
