SPARTANBURG, SC—
Winthrop softball suffered a 4-1 loss to Western Carolina in its final game of the Spartan Classic on the campus of USC Upstate, Sunday afternoon.

Winthrop is now 3-10 on the year as it looks to bounce back next weekend when it hosts the Combat Invitational. The Eagles will play two games on Friday, Feb. 28 with the home opener at 3 p.m. against Robert Morris and then will face Northern Colorado following that game at approximately 5 p.m. The Catamounts improve to 3-7 on the year with the win.

Western Carolina took advantage of an error to lead off the top of the fourth inning as it came up with two, two-out RBI singles for a 2-0 lead.  Salvo reached on a leadoff throwing error by Kristy Noble. After Sarah Allen got the next two batters out, she ran into trouble. Courtney Buchanan singled to left and then advanced to second as Corn tried to throw the runner out at home. Then Courtney Price followed with a single up the middle to put runners at the corners. That brought up Brooke Coggins, who singled to right center, allowed Buchanan to score for the 2-0 lead as the inning ended with Price trying to get to third as she was nailed on the throw by Mel Andrea.

The Catamounts struck again in the sixth inning as Buchanan and Coggins delivered RBI singles. Taylor Sigmon singled with one out and was sacrificed to second by Amber Kimrey before Buchanan singled home Sigmon on the single to center. Sutton Watson came into to relieve Allen at that point and walked the first batter before yielding a single to Coggins, scoring Buchanan.

After going 32.2 innings with scoring a run, the Eagles finally ended that streak in the bottom of the sixth inning. Corn drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a ground out to the pitcher by Megan Winningham. Andrea grounded out to third base, but Corn was able to advance to third on the play. Alex White stepped in with two outs and delivered a base hit to third as Corn crossed the plate to make it 4-1.

Allen suffered the loss in the start as she is now 0-4 after allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Watson tossed 1.1 innings of relief allowing one hit, walking one and striking out three. All nine hits for Western Carolina were singles.

Jordan Garrett tossed a complete game for Western Carolina as she allowed one run on six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts to improve to 2-3 on the year.

A two-out double to right center in the bottom of the second inning put White in scoring position for the Eagles. Naomi Stevens followed with a walk before Noble fouled out to the catcher to end the threat.

In the third inning the Eagles got back-to-back singles with two outs by Zharne Glover and Corn, but Glover was thrown out on the Corn single trying to get to third to end the inning.

Corn singled in the third inning to extend her hitting streak to six games as she has now reached base in 12-of-13 games this season. White finished with two hits on the day as she drove in her team-leading sixth RBI on the year. For her efforts over the weekend, Corn was named to the Spartan Classic All-Tournament Team. Corn was 5-for-10 in four games with a run scored as she is now batting .400 on the year.
