SPARTANBURG, SC— Winthrop softball suffered two shutout losses Saturday afternoon at the Spartan Classic as it lost 9-0 to USC Upstate and 3-0 to Furman.
The two losses drop the Eagles to 3-9 on the year as they have lost four straight. USC Upstate is now 13-0 on the year while Furman improved to 4-5. The Eagles will look to end their losing skid against Western Carolina on Sunday at 1 p.m. in their final game of the Spartan Classic.
Winthrop managed just two hits in the last game of the day as Shelby Parker walked one with eight strikeouts in a seven inning complete game.
Over the first three innings the Eagles left three runners stranded.
McKenzi Corn extended her hitting streak to five games as she singled to left with two outs, but
Mel Andrea struck out swinging to end the inning. Corn had the only two hits on the day for Winthrop.
In the top of the third inning,
Zharne Glover walked with two outs to get things started and then stole second.
Kim Ryder reached on a throwing error by the shortstop as Glover moved to third. Corn stepped it but when down looking, which proved one of Parker's biggest strikeouts of the day.
Sutton Watson suffered the loss as she allowed three runs on six hits in four innings with a walk and four strikeouts as she is now 3-3 on the year.
In the first game of the day the Spartans, ranked 28
th in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Top 25 Poll, put up four runs in back-to-back innings to defeat the Eagles in five innings.
Winthrop missed an opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the top of the first as Ryder and Corn were stranded after consecutive singles with one out. Andrea sacrificed the runners over for the second out and Lexi Shubert was able to get Sarah Allen to foul out to end the threat.
The four-run third inning for Upstate was highlighted by a bases-clearing double from Kendall Settlemyre as she hit one into the gap in left center. Prior to the double, Allen had gotten a grounder to short with the bases loaded by a throwing error to first allowed all the runners to remain safe as the Spartans went up 2-0 on the play.
The Spartans got all four runs in the fourth inning from four separate hits as Cheyenne Griffin and Erin Schattle provided RBI doubles while Settlemyre and Hayley Reinfeld each had RBI singles.
Allen suffered the loss in the circle as she is now 0-3 on the year as she allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Sophomore
Dallas King allowed four runs on five hits in one inning of work.
Shubert held the Eagles to three hits with no walks and five strikeouts over five innings as she improves to 5-0.
