Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team dropped its home opener Monday at the Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex, 15-11 to the San Diego State Aztecs.

The Eagles record fell to 0-2 overall with the loss while San Diego State improved to 2-0.

San Diego State got off to a strong start, netting two goals in the first 35 seconds.  After senior Mary Accomando got the Eagles on the board, the Aztecs rattled off three straight goals to go up 5-1 with 19:16 left in the first half.

Winthrop cut the deficit to 5-3 with goals off the sticks of junior Jenna Kasmarik and sophomore Hayley Krause.  San Diego State then scored the next four of five goals to go up 9-5 with 4:10 on the clock.  Kasmarik added the goal in the middle of the Aztec tallies.

The Eagles closed the half on a strong note, grabbing two goals in the final 1:01.  Krause scored with just over a minute left on a free-position shot.  Kasmarik brought the Eagles back within three with eight seconds left.

The Aztecs got the first tally of the second half, 1:40 in to go up 10-6.  Winthrop then scored three straight in a span of 2:01 to get within one at 10-9.  Krause netted her third of the game at 26:11, sophomore Shannon Gallagher grabbed her goal at 25:43 and sophomore Logan McCarthy scored at 24:10.

San Diego State was able to withstand the Eagle momentum, scoring twice more to go up 12-9 with 16:52 remaining.  Winthrop pulled one back at 13:18 from Kasmarik, but three more goals by San Diego State over the final 12 minutes proved too much as the Eagles fell 15-11.

Kasmarik finished with four goals on six shots and also grabbed five draw controls.  Krause added three goals on seven shots and went 2-for-3 on free-position attempts.  Sophomore goalie Camille King recorded nine saves and picked up four ground balls.

The Eagles will return to the field on Sunday, February 23 at 1 p.m. when they travel to Fairfax, VA to take on George Mason.
