Lacrosse Hosts Home Opener Monday Against San Diego State

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team will open its home schedule Monday at noon at the Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex against the Aztecs of San Diego State University after the winter weather postponed the contest from its originally scheduled Friday evening date.

The Eagles enter the contest with a 0-1 overall record after dropping its season opener on February 9 to the Ohio State Buckeyes.  San Diego enters with a 1-0 record.

Despite their loss to Ohio State, the Eagles did pick up two weekly Big South honors.  Junior transfer Jenna Kasmarik was named the Player of the Week while Sydney Cope picked up the Freshman of the Week award.

Kasmarik got her Eagle career off to a great start, tallying four goals against the Buckeyes.  She also picked up five draw controls and caused one turnover.

Cope scored her first collegiate goal on her only free-position attempt of the contest.  Logan McCarthy, Shannon Gallagher and Abigail Blevins all picked up a goal apiece in the first game of the season.

Sophomore goalie Camille King had a strong outing against Ohio State as she tied a career-high with 14 saves.

The Aztecs won their first game of the season Sunday on the road at Davidson, 11-10.  San Diego State built a 7-1 lead over the Wildcats and held a 9-3 edge at the half.  The Aztecs held on for the victory despite scoring only two goals in the second half.

Bailey Ewing and Andrea Killebrew each scored two goals for the Aztecs while seven other players scored one goal apiece.  Goalie Katrina Reeves recorded four saves.

The Eagles will head back out on the road next Sunday, February 23 as they travel to Fairfax, VA to take on George Mason.
