ROCK HILL, SC--
Pol Sole's goal in the 49th minute proved to be the game-winner as Winthrop extended its winning streak to five games with a 3-2 over Longwood, Saturday evening in Big South Conference action.

Winthrop improved to 8-2 on the year and 2-0 in the Big South while Longwood falls to 1-6-1 overall and 0-1 in the league. The game wraps up six straight home games for the Eagles as they won 5-of-6. Winthrop will put its win streak on the line Friday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. as it travels to Clinton, SC to take on Presbyterian College.

"We are pleased to get the three points tonight," said Winthrop head coach Rich Posipanko. "Longwood is much better than their record indicates. However, I feel we made the game closer by not finishing our chances. Our finishing was below par tonight and inability to clear the ball put us in a bit of trouble tonight."

Sole scored on a free kick in the 49th minute to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. The free kick was awarded just off center to the left of the goalkeeper from about 25 yards out. The Eagles looked as if they were set up for a service to the middle of the box but Sole ripped the ball around the wall as it curved into the goal in the lower right corner as Carlos Canas tried to make a diving save.

Winthrop held the 3-1 lead and had several good chances to increase its lead but Canas and the Longwood back line held up. The Lancers made it a one-goal game in the 72nd minute when Jonathan Majin beat his man inside the box to the end line and his service found a wide open Nnamdi Ikeazor, who ripped a shot into the net first time.

Winthrop led 2-1 at the half as all three goals came in the final 15 minutes of the first 45. Winthrop took the lead in the 32nd minute as sophomore Max Hasenstab netted his third goal of the season. Winthrop was applying pressure offensively and Hasenstab ran onto a free ball heading toward the box as he took a couple of dribbles and slotted a shot home around the goalkeeper.

Longwood nearly equalized in the 39th minute when Dan Campos dribbled down the middle of the field and fired a shot from 25 yards out that shot off the left post and out. However, the Lancers did tie the game just a few seconds after when Marten Pajurnurm sent a ball into the box that Guilherme Avelar dove and pushed away toward the top of the box and Jonathan Kukapa hit a first time shot low into the open goal.

The Eagles responded quickly as Hasenstab scored his second goal of the game. Pol Sole slipped a ball behind the defense to set up Patrick Barnes with a one-on-one with the keeper. Unselfishly Barnes slipped the ball square to Hasenstab as he approached the keeper and Hasenstab calmly placed a shot into the open goal.

Avelar made one save to improve his record to 3-1 on the year as the Eagles finished with a 17-10 edge in shots. Canas finished with six saves.
