CLINTON, SC—
Winthrop men's soccer scored three second half goals to earn its sixth straight win with a 4-0 victory over Presbyterian College, Friday evening in Big South Conference action.

The 23rd ranked Eagles improved to 9-2 on the year and 3-0 in the Big South. The loss drops the Blue Hose to 1-9 overall and 0-4 in the league. It is the first 3-0 start for Winthrop in the Big South since 2008 when the team won four straight to open up conference play.

"We're very happy to pick up another three points in conference play, especially on the road," said Winthrop head coach Rich Posipanko. "I think we made it harder on ourselves than we needed and credit that to Presbyterian and we're very happy to get out with a clean sheet."

The Eagles entered the game ranked 6th nationally in scoring and continued to find the back of the net with their fourth game of the season with four or more goals.

Winthrop led 1-0 at the half but two goals within a two-minute by the Eagles opened up the game. Senior Pol Sole made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute when he converted a penalty, for his fifth goal of the season. A minute and 17 seconds later, sophomore Max Hasenstab scored his fifth goal of the year as senior Nick Nova played the ball to Hasenstab who took a touch and then ripped a shot into the corner.

Sophomore James Skonicki netted his first collegiate goal in the 79th minute when he headed home service from senior Jon Simic.

Freshman Sam Schmidt scored his third goal of the season and second in league play with the eventual game-winning goal in the 28th minute. Schmidt scored off a cross from Pietro Bottari as he struck it first time into the back of the net.

The shutout was the fourth of the season for Winthrop and second in three games as senior Guilherme Avelar made seven saves to keep sheet clean. It is Avelar's second shutout of the season and sixth in his Eagle career. The Eagles finished the game with a 13-9 advantage on shots and 6-4 on corner kicks. PC's Johnny Archer finished the game with five saves.

Winthrop will be off the next seven days as it is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 4:30 p.m. when it travels to Asheville, NC to take on UNC Asheville.
