ROCK HILL, SC—
Winthrop scored three second half goals to rally for a 3-1 victory over Gardner-Webb, Wednesday evening in Big South Conference men's soccer action.

The Eagles run their unbeaten streak to eight games as they improve to 10-2-1 on the year and remain unbeaten in league play at 4-0-1. Gardner-Webb falls to 2-10-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the league.

After trailing at the half, Winthrop came out firing in the second half with 18 shots for a total of 26 in the match. Freshman Charles Coulson tied the match in the 66th minute with his third goal of the season. The Eagles were rewarded with a corner kick after Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Matthew Swan turned away a shot from Magnus Thorsson as the Eagles looked for the equalizer. Pol Sole's service off the corner made its way through traffic and Coulson was there at the back post to strike a shot first time that beat Swan low to the near post.

Less than five minutes later the Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the 71st minute when Patrick Barnes received a pass from Max Hasenstab inside the box and Barnes found the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Winthrop added an insurance goal in the 85th minute when Hasenstab, who had been so close to a goal all evening, received a pass from James Skonicki and held off a defender as he slotted a shot into the net after crossing the top of the 18-yard box.

"I thought we played really well tonight," said Winthrop head coach Rich Posipanko. "Our finishing was a bit disappointing at times. Gardner-Webb is a very good team. Their record is no reflection to the way they play. It was a good, technical college game to watch."

Winthrop nearly fell behind 2-0 early in the second half when Denzel Clarke had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper after a Winthrop player miskicked a clearance. Clarke dribbled in and got a solid shot off but Guilherme Avelar stood his ground and was able to make the save to keep the Eagles in the game.

Despite quality scoring chances in the first half, the Eagles trailed 1-0 after 45 minutes. The Runnin' Bulldogs took advantage of the Eagle defense playing a little loose as a ball was played to the top of the 18 yard box from wide by Ali Al-Gashamy to Nathan Rose, who then played a quick pass into the box to  Patrick Gurser. The quick one-two pass put Gurser free in the box as he slotted a cross perfectly to Rose at the top of the six as his first touch found the back of the net.

The Eagles had a great chance in the 12th minute when a long throw found its way to Hasenstab in front of the net about 10 yards out as he ripped a shot but Swan came flying out of goal and threw his body in front and was able to deflect the ball wide.

In the 33rd minute, center back Jordi Lluch dribbled his way into the box, cut back toward the middle and just inside the 18 he let a shot fly that was bending toward the top right corner but it hit the post and bounced away. Jordan Stoddart hit the crossbar in the 52nd minute when he dribbled by a defender at the top of the box and got a shot off after going by the defender that beat Swan near post but the ball bounced off the bottom part of the bar, hit the goal line and was cleared away.

Avelar finshed the game with four saves on nine shots from the Runnin' Bulldogs as he improved to 5-1-1 on the year. Swan finished the game with eight saves on 26 shots by Winthrop.

Winthrop will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. when it hosts High Point. It will be "Senior Day" as the Eagles wrap-up their home schedule.
