ROCK HILL, SC-- The Winthrop men's soccer team will put its unbeaten streak on the line Thursday night when it takes on Brevard College in its home opener of the 2013 season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Winthrop opened the season with five regular season contests away from home, but is off to one of the best starts in school history at 4-0-1 against a competitive schedule so far. Meanwhile, Brevard College is coming off a 1-0 loss to USC-Aiken and is 2-2 on the year.
The Eagles are asking all fans to participate in a "White Out" by wearing a white shirt.
So far this season the Eagles have been solid on both ends of the field as they enter the game ranked 13
th nationally in scoring at 2.2 goals per game and are 66
th in goals against average and 23
rd in save percentage.
Leading the way offensively for the Eagles is freshman
Max Hasenstab with two goals and three assists for a team-best seven points. His three assists rank 15
th in the country and third in the Big South. Joining Hasenstab on the list of multiple goals are senior's
Achille Obougou and
Adriano Negri who each have two. Winthrop has scored at least two goals in four of its five games this season and is coming off a season-high in goals in a 5-2 victory over Stetson.
The center of the defense this season has been manned by familiar faces in sophomore's
Kyle Kennedy and
Jordi Lluch. Newcomers
Pietro Bottari and
Cody Winter have been very solid at outside back while junior
Guilherme Avelar has been impressive in goal. Avelar is ranked 8
th nationally in saves per game and 25
th in save percentage while sporting a 0.96 goals against average. Also key to the defensive and offensive success is sophomore
Magnus Thorsson in his defensive midfield role. Thorsson was named to the National Team of the Week for College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer.com this past week after being named the MVP of the Mercer Classic.
The Eagles take on a Brevard College team that is 2-0 at home and 0-2 on the road. Freshman Rhem Stubbs leads the offense with two of the team's four goals as he netted the game-winning goal in double-overtime of its season-opening win over Erskine.
Freshman Ryan McPhillips is second on the team in scoring with a goal and an assist while Augusto Isern also has a goal.
Freshman Heath Turner has started all four games in goal and has a 1.17 goals against average and earned a 1-0 shutout over King College.
This will be the fourth straight season the Eagles will open up its home schedule against Brevard as they lead the all-time series 9-0. Winthrop is 23-14-1 all-time in home openers, having won six straight.
