ROCK HILL, SC-- Chelsey Schoenfeldt's two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie and lifted fifth-seeded Winthrop to a 4-1 victory over #4 Radford, Thursday afternoon on the opening day of the Big South Conference Softball Championship presented by Musco Lighting.

After McKenzi Corn was hit with a pitch to lead off the sixth inning, Schoenfeldt stepped in and ripped the first pitch to center for her 16th home run of the season.

Winthrop improves to 26-27 on the year and advances to take on #8 Charleston Southern, which upset #1 Coastal Carolina. on Friday at 2 p.m. That game will be at 2 p.m. on Friday. Radford falls to 20-35 on the year and will play at 9 a.m. on Friday against the loser of the Charleston Southern/Coastal Carolina match-up.

Trailing 1-0 and being no-hit in the fifth, a one-out home run by Melanie Andrea evened the contest. Andrea went after the first pitch and ripped a shot over the fence in center. It was her third long ball of the season.

Emily Naegele led off the second with a home run to give Radford an early 1-0 lead, but had just one runner reach base after the third inning as Schoenfeldt also tossed a complete game to earn her fifth win of the season. Schoenfeldt allowed one run on four hits with no walks and no strikeouts.

Radford's Rachel Walters suffered the loss and falls to 14-13 after allowing three runs on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Andrea was the only player on both teams with two hits as she finished the game with two RBI. After Schoenfeldt's home run in the sixth, Andrea added a two-out RBI single down the left field line to make it 4-1.
