RADFORD, VA – Chelsey Schoenfeldt hit her 31
st career home run in game one of a doubleheader with Radford becoming Winthrop's career home run leader, but it was not enough as the Eagles dropped game one 4-2 before falling 4-3 in the game two, Saturday afternoon at Radford.
Winthrop trailed 4-0 in game one entering the top half of the seventh inning when Schoenfeldt broke the school's career home run record, previously held by Janiva Willis, with a two run shot to right field cutting the Highlander lead in half.
McKenzi Corn also scored on the play after she led-off the inning with an infield single.
Alex White followed the home run when she singled to centerfield with one out in the inning, but that would be the last hit the Eagles got off Highlander pitcher Rachael Walters (14-12).
Sutton Watson (15-13) was in the circle for Winthrop in game one throwing six innings, allowing four runs, only one earned and striking out four batters. The Eagles fell behind in the bottom of the first on a three-run home run off the bat of Radford's Morgan Eye. Eye's home run drove in Becky Mantel, who reached after being hit by a pitch and Jessie Hutchens, who reached on an error.
The Eagles (25-26, 12-11 BSC) found themselves in a familiar situation in game, two falling behind 4-0 after the Highlanders (19-34, 12-11 BSC) plated a run in the bottom of the second and three runs in the third off Schoenfeldt (4-7) who started game two in the circle for the Eagles throwing 2.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out one batter.
Winthrop answered with a run in the top half of the fourth inning on Sarah Allen's RBI bloop single to right center drove in Corn who led off the inning with her 15
th double of the season.
Allen capped off a big game at the plate in the sixth inning when she doubled to centerfield with the bases loaded driving in two runs and cutting the deficit to 4-3. Allen's double drove in
Kristy Noble and Corn, who each reached on singles and capped her 3-for-3, three RBI game at the plate.
Radford's Emily Naegele and Morgan Eye each posted 2-for-3 performances at the plate with an RBI and a run scored in game two. Jessica Agee also drove in a run for the Highlanders when she picked up her only hit of the game in the second inning. Jackie Jenkins (4-21) earned the win, throwing a complete game.
The Eagles and Highlanders will wrap up their three game series on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. The game had previously been scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. but has been moved up because of the weather forecast in Radford.
