ROCK HILL, SC—The softball team wraps-up the regular season this weekend as it heads to Radford for a 3-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Eagles are 25-24 overall and 12-9 in the Big South while Radford enters the weekend at 17-34 overall and 10-11 in the league.
Winthrop has lost 10 straight to the Highlanders, who now have a 35-29 lead in the all-time series. Winthrop has suffered three straight shutouts at the hands of the Highlanders and has been shutout in seven of the 10 consecutive losses.
Just one victory this weekend secures fourth place in the Big South standings for the Eagles. They are still mathematically alive for third place. To finish third, Winthrop would have to sweep Radford and Longwood must be swept at Campbell.
This season Winthrop features one of the league's better offenses at 4.8 runs per game and ranked 21
st nationally in home runs per game. Winthrop has hit a school record 56 home runs this year with 28 of them coming in 21 league games. The Eagles are also averaging 5.04 runs per game in conference.
The offense is led by a number of players that have set career-highs in several categories this season. Senior
Chelsey Schoenfeldt has provided one of the best individual offensive performances in school history as she set a school record for home runs in a season with 14 and has also scored 32 runs to go along with a career-best 52 RBI. She's now just eight shy of the single-season mark of 60 RBI in a season set by Jenny Scrymgeour in 2007. Schoenfeldt is also tied for the school's career mark of 30 home runs.
Junior
McKenzi Corn is trying to become the sixth different player in school history to bat .400 or better in a season as she's currently sitting right at .400. The left fielder also leads the team with 38 runs scored and is closing in on the single-season record for doubles in a season. Corn has 14 doubles on the year and is chasing Christine Yon's record of 17, which has stood since 1995.
Sophomore
Kristy Noble, junior
Alex White and senior
Kathryn Eberlin are all having career years at the plate. Noble is coming off a two home run performance on Tuesday in which she hit a grand slam and a two-run homer for a career-best six RBI in a single game. Noble has nine home runs and 32 RBI on the year. White has eight home runs and 22 RBI while batting .299. Eberlin has 20 runs, seven doubles, nine home runs and 37 RBI.
In their careers, Schoenfeldt, Eberlin, Corn and White have never recorded an RBI against the Highlanders. The four are a combined 7-for-56 against Radford.
Sophomore
Sutton Watson will look for her 16
th victory this weekend as she's 15-12 on the year with a 3.11 ERA and 127 strikeouts to 49 walks in 162 innings of work. Schoenfeldt has made five starts in the pitching circle in league games and posts a 4-2 mark with a 2.96 ERA and 31 strikeouts to 10 walks in 47.1 innings.
The Eagles face a Radford team that has lost two straight and 11 of its last 12 games. That never really means much during rivalry games as all the games this weekend are sure to be a battle.
Radford is led offensively by Jessie Hutchens with 24 runs, 12 doubles, 10 home runs, and 36 RBI. Emily Naegele is batting .270 with 29 runs, nine home runs and 26 RBI. Morgan Eye is tied for second on the team with 26 RBI and leads the team with 14 steals.
The Highlanders are led by three-time all-conference selection and two-time pitcher of the year Jackie Jenkins. Jenkins is having a down senior season at 3-21 with a 5.11 ERA with 40 strikeouts and 46 walks in 128.2 innings. However, Jenkins has owned the Eagles in her career with a perfect 5-0 record and having tossed three complete game shutouts. Jenkins has tossed 31.1 innings against Winthrop allowing 19 hits, one runs, with five walks and seven strikeouts. Of the 19 hits allowed, only one has been for extra bases. Freshman Rachael Walters has tossed a team-high 156 innings and is 13-12.
