ROCK HILL, SC—The softball team will step away from league play Tuesday evening as it heads to Boone, NC to take on Appalachian State in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
Winthrop has won three straight games after a series sweep of Gardner-Webb this past weekend and is 20-17 on the year. The Eagles reached the 20-win mark for the first time since 2010. The team is now looking at the 30-win mark, which if achieved could put them in pretty good shape in the Big South Conference standings as team's continue to battle for seeds.
Appalachian State has also won three straight after a series sweep at home over Elon this past weekend and boasts an 18-13 mark.
This will be the second time this season the two teams have squared off in a doubleheader as the Mountaineers came down to Rock Hill on March 20. Winthrop captured game one 10-4 before Appalachian State won the nightcap 7-6. The all-time series favors Winthrop at 11-7.
The Eagles are pounding out home runs at a school record pace as they currently have 46 on the season (37 games) and are approaching the school mark set by the 2004 team of 52. That year the Eagles hit 52 home runs in 67 games. That team had two players with 11 home runs, four with six or more and five with five or more home runs. The 2013 team has one player over 10 but also has five players with five or more home runs. The Eagles hit 10 home runs last week in four games. The team entered last week ranked 24
th nationally in home runs per game.
Senior
Chelsey Schoenfeldt is the top power hitter on the team as she set a new school record on Sunday with her 12
th long ball of the season. That breaks the mark of 11 set by Janiva Willis and Kjersti Johnson in 2004. Schoenfeldt has now moved within two homers of tying Willis' career mark of 30. In addition to her home run record chase, Schoenfeldt is also moving up the ladder on a couple more career lists at Winthrop. She is four RBI away from fourth place and is currently third in all-time walks (74).
Junior
McKenzi Corn increased her batting average over the weekend and continues to the lead the team in that category with a .414 average. She had her first career four-hit game in game one of the Gardner-Webb series. Corn and Schoenefeldt have both reached base in 14 consecutive games. It is a personal best for Corn while Schoenfeldt's career-best if 16 games.
Displaying a lot of power recently is sophomore second baseman
Kristy Noble. The second-year starter has homered in four of the last six games and now has six on the year, tying her career-best set in 2012. Senior
Kathryn Eberlin and junior
Alex White have both set career-bests for home runs in a single-season with seven.
Sophomore
Sutton Watson earned her 12
th victory on Saturday as she tossed her third shutout on the season. She is now 12-9 and has a 3.30 ERA with 106 strikeouts to 40 walks in 127.1 innings of work. Watson along with pitchers
Sara Allen, Bradlee Holeman and Schoenfeldt could see more work than usual against the Mountaineers.
Appalachian State features an offense averaging 5.2 runs per game led by senior Allie Cashion's .393 average, 12 doubles and seven home runs. The 5-8 outfielder also has 25 RBI and was 3-for-8 with two runs, four RBI and two home runs against Winthrop on Mar. 20.
Junior Lindsay Loudermilk leads the team with 28 RBI as she also has four doubles and four homers. She was 3-for-6 with three runs and an RBI in the first two meetings with Winthrop.
Sophomore Alissa Schoelkopf and freshman Shivaun Landeros are the main pitching duo for the Mountaineers. Schoelkopf is 12-7 with a 3.52 ERA with 97 strikeouts to 73 walks in 113.1 innings of work. Landeros is 6-5 with a 4.42 ERA and has struck out 44 and walked 42 in 90.1 innings.
