ROCK HILL, SC—
Hoping to end a three-game skid, the Winthrop softball team heads to Boiling Springs, NC this weekend to take on Big South Conference foe Gardner-Webb, beginning Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. The series will conclude with a single-game on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Winthrop has dropped three straight and is coming off a 3-1 loss at Campbell as it enters the weekend series with a 17-17 record overall and 5-5 mark in the league. Gardner-Webb is 4-22 on the year and 1-9 in the conference.

The Runnin' Bulldogs took the series from the Eagles last season 2-1 and has won the last three meetings but the all-time series favors Winthrop 17-9.

The Eagles were held to just one run in their last game, which is the fewest runs they've scored in the previous 10 games. Winthrop looks to bounce back as it takes on a Gardner-Webb team sporting a 7.50 team earned run average and allowing 7.03 runs per game. Winthrop is averaging 4.7 runs per game on the year and have increased that to 5.5 runs in league play.

The chase for the single-season home run record continues for senior Chelsey Schoenfeldt as she currently has 10 on the year. The single-season mark is 11 held by Janiva Willis and Kjersti Johnson set in 2004. She's batting .385 in 10 league games and has 10 runs, four home runs and 12 RBI. In 2012 she was 3-for-8 and is batting .346 life time against Gardner-Webb.

Junior McKenzi Corn continues to lead the team with a .396 batting average as she's reached base in 11 straight games and has a .479 on-base percentage.

Sophomore Sutton Watson continues to carry the load in the pitching circle as she's 11-9 on the year with a 3.26 ERA and 91 strikeouts to 33 walks in 116 innings of work. On Wednesday she allowed three runs on six hits in six innings of work as the only big hit being a three-run homer.

Gardner-Webb dropped a doubleheader on Wednesday at Western Carolina as it stepped away from league play for a midweek contest. This after the Runnin' Bulldogs avoided a sweep at home against Coastal Carolina with a 3-2 win in the final game of the series. It was the conference win for Gardner-Webb.

Sarah Meenaghan leads the team with a .419 batting average, which ranks 5th in the Big South. Meenaghan has 12 runs and seven RBI. Morgan Baker leads the team in home runs with six and RBI with 25 as she's batting .320 on the year.

Gardner-Webb has used a trio of pitchers nearly equally on the season. Ashley Rhyne has a team-best ERA at 6.27 with a 2-8 record and has also pitched the most innings at 54.2. Jessica Childers is 1-8 on the year and has 50.1 innings while Alyssa Gutierrez is 1-6 and has pitched 48 innings. Rhyne and Childers combine for 20 of the 26 starts on staff.
