BUIES CREEK, NC—
Winthrop softball suffered its third straight loss as it fell 3-1 at Campbell, Wednesday evening in Big South Conference action.

Winthrop evens its record to 17-17 overall and is 5-5 in the Big South while Campbell improves to 24-12 overall and 8-2 in the league. Winthrop will look to end its losing skid on Saturday as it remains on the road in Boiling Springs, NC for a three-game series at Gardner-Webb in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The series will conclude Sunday with a single game at 2 p.m.

“It was a good ball game,” said Winthrop head coach Mark Cooke. “The difference in the game was one pitch. I'll call it a coach's error. We didn't hit well either as we had opportunities with the right people up but just didn't come through. Credit their pitcher as she threw a great ball game and established her change-up. They're one of the best teams in our conference and our team played and competed well. We played them tough.”

The difference in the game came in the bottom of the fourth as Sarah Forgacs ripped a 1-0 pitch over the fence in right field for a 3-0 lead. That gave pitcher Courtney Roberts all the run support she needed as she held Winthrop to three hits and improved to 12-4 on the year. The freshman right-hander allowed the one run on three hits with three walks and nine strikeouts.

Kelsey Ritter spoiled the shutout for Roberts in the top of the seventh inning as she belted her fourth homer of the year, a solo shot to left field.

The Eagles had an opportunity to take an early lead when they loaded the bases in the top of the first. Teja Durante led off with a single to center as two batters later McKenzi Corn drew a walk. After Chelsey Schoenfeldt popped up to short for the second out, Kathryn Eberlin walked to load the bases. The threat ended as Alex White popped up to second on a 3-1 count.

Sutton Watson fell to 11-9 on the year as she tossed a complete game six innings allowing three runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
