ROCK HILL, SC—The softball team will be back in action after a nine days off when it travels up the road to take on Charlotte in a doubleheader Tuesday evening.
The first pitch is set for 7 p.m. as the Eagles and 49ers meet for the 74
th and 75
th time in history as Winthrop holds a 39-34 lead in the series. Winthrop and Charlotte met in 2012 in Rock Hill as Winthrop took game one 1-0 and then fell 6-4 in the nightcap.
Winthrop is on a 3-game winning streak after sweeping conference foe Liberty April 19-20 and is facing its final non-conference opponent. The Eagles have only faced one Atlantic 10 team this season as they defeated Dayton 7-2 at home. Charlotte is 21-25 on the year and coming off a double-header split against St. Louis at home. The 49ers are 6-2 against the Big South Conference this season with the only two losses coming at Campbell. They defeated Presbyterian College twice in extra innings and swept Gardner-Webb and Radford all at home.
Offense continues to be the strength of the Eagles, led by junior
McKenzi Corn and senior
Chelsey Schoenfeldt. Corn leads the team with a .399 batting average, 13 doubles and 39 runs scored. Schoenfeldt is batting .343 with a team-best 14 home runs and 52 RBI. She's chasing the Winthrop all-time home run record as she's currently tied with Janiva Willis with 30. She already broke the single-season record for home runs.
Junior
Alex White and senior
Kathryn Eberlin are both enjoying career seasons. White is batting .295 with 15 runs, seven home runs and 19 RBI while Eberlin is hitting .284 with 18 runs, nine home runs and 36 RBI. Sophomore
Kristy Noble is in a small slump with two hits in her last 15 since her four-hit day in the final game of the Coastal Carolina series. However, she's hitting .283 with 31 runs, seven home runs and 26 RBI.
Winthrop is averaging 4.8 runs per game and 1.13 home runs per game while as a team it is hitting .262. Winthrop's home runs per game average ranks 25
th in the nation while Schoenfeldt also ranks 25
th nationally in home runs. Against Liberty, Winthrop smacked its 53
rd home run as a team and broke the single-season mark of 52 set by the 2004 team in 67 games.
Sophomore
Sutton Watson leads the pitching staff with 14 wins as she's 14-12 on the year with a 3.12 ERA and 126 strikeouts to 48 walks in 155 innings of work. Schoenfeldt has the second most innings at 61.2 and has a 4-6 record on the year.
Charlotte is also a strong offensive team as it averages 4.82 runs per game and entered last week ranked 17
th nationally with 1.6 doubles per game and 42
nd in team batting at .303. The 49ers are batting .297 as a team and have 69 doubles and 27 home runs.
Sophomore Natalie Capone leads the team in batting with a .357 average and has 20 runs and 15 RBI. Junior Chelsea Ingersoll and senior Briana Gwaltney provide the most power. Ingersoll has nine home runs and 25 RBI while Gwaltney has seven home runs and a team-best 35 RBI.
The lineup is deep offensively as freshman Jessica Plemmons has a team-high 13 doubles to go along with 24 RBI while sophomore Samantha Slade has 26 RBI on the year.
Junior Katie Watkins leads the pitching staff with a 13-14 record and 3.60 ERA as she's struck out 135 with 95 walks in 165.1 innings. Watkins has two victories in her career against the Eagles. Sophomore Chelsea Lisikatos is 6-10 with a 3.99 ERA and has 58 strikeouts to 43 walks in 112.1 innings.
Winthrop may lead the lead the all-time series, but Charlotte has won four of the last five meetings.
