ROCK HILL, SC -- The Winthrop baseball team returns home for a for a midweek match up with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at The Winthrop Ballpark.
Winthrop looks to continue its strong play in non-conference midweek games in the contest with Wake Forest on Tuesday. The Eagles are 10-3 (6-1 at home) in midweek games this season including 1-1 against ACC teams.
Senior
Matt Pierpont's second complete game of the season led the Eagles to their first Big South win since March 30th (against Gardner-Webb) on Saturday afternoon against Liberty. However, the Flames responded with a pair of dominant pitching performances of their own. Liberty arms limited the Eagles to just one run in each of the final two games of the series as the Flames topped Winthrop 4-1 in Saturday's nightcap and 3-1 in the series finale on Sunday.
Winthrop carries a 15-27 (3-12 Big South) record into Tuesday night's match up with Wake Forest while the Demon Deacons hold a 23-20 (7-14 ACC) record on the 2013 season. The Eagles are 7-10 all-time against the Demon Deacons including 5-4 at home. Winthrop has fallen to Wake in their last two meetings including last year's 5-2 loss in Rock Hill. The Demon Deacons (6-9 on the road this season)carry a four game win streak into Tuesday's game including a three-game sweep of Boston College over the weekend. Winthrop will see the Wake again later in the season when the Eagles travel to Winston-Salem, NC on May 14
th for a 6:00 p.m. ballgame.
Wake Forest has swung the bat well this season as the Demon Deacon hitters are batting .278 on the season and averaging over six runs per game. Evan Stephens leads the team with a .395 batting average and a .503 on-base percentage while Pat Blair is hitting a strong .301 on the season while swiping 18 bases on 20 attempts. Lefty Matt Conway will get the start for Wake on the mound on Tuesday. Conway is 1-1 in 10 appearances this season with 37 strikeouts while holding hitters to a .259 average. Conway has also provided solid production at the plate with a .350 batting average while leading the team in doubles (16). As a staff, Wake pitchers hold a 4.29 team ERA while allowing opposing offenses a .273 batting average and over five runs per game.
Junior outfielder Cody Dolan (.324 season batting average) continues to make things happen at the plate as he is currently in the midst of a six game hitting streak. Over the past six games, Dolan is 11 for 25 (.440) at the plate with six RBI's, two home runs, eight runs scored, and a .760 slugging percentage. Despite snapping his 11-game hitting streak on Sunday,
Leighton Daniels has provided the Eagles with a spark in the leadoff position as he has bumped his average to .281 on the season with a .342 on-base percentage.
Senior right-hander
Steven Howell will make his second start of the season for the Eagles on Tuesday. Howell is 1-0 on the season with a 3.86 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 16 total appearances. In his last start, Howell went three innings against Davidson allowing two runs on five hits and striking out two.
