Softball Travels To Campbell For Midweek Clash Wednesday Evening

Eagles Look To End Two-Game Skid

Having lost two straight in league play, the Winthrop softball team looks to bounce back when it travels to Buies Creek, NC to take on Campbell in a single game, Wednesday evening. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

Winthrop enters the midweek contest with a 17-16 overall record and 5-4 mark in the Big South. Campbell is 23-12 overall and 7-2 in the league. This will be the 36th meeting all-time between the Eagles and Camels. Winthrop leads the series 25-10, but has lost the four meetings and holds a 19-7 advantage head-to-head in league games. The Camels have won three straight and five of their last six games.

The last time these two teams met was in an elimination game of the 2012 Big South Conference Softball Championship. It was a battle to the end as Campbell held on for a 10-9 victory as the Eagles scored three runs in the top of the seventh, but fell just shy of tying the game in their final at-bat.

This game will two good offenses that possess a lot of power as Campbell enters the game ranked 17th nationally in home runs per game (1.17) and the Eagles are ranked 24th at 1.09 per game. Campbell's top long ball hitter is junior first baseman Raven Lee with 12 on the season, ranking 16th nationally and second in the Big South for total home runs. Winthrop senior Chelsey Schoenfeldt has 10 home runs on the year, ranking 41st nationally and fourth in the league. Lee is seventh in the nation in RBI per game (1.29) while Schoenfeldt ranks 13th at 1.21.

Schoenfeldt enjoyed success against Campbell last year in the four games as she batted .444 with two runs and two home runs with five RBI and an on-base percentage of .538. In 2012, Lee was 4-for-11 (.364) with a run and three RBI against the Eagles.

Campbell has pounded out 41 home runs in 35 games this year while the Eagles have 36 in 33 games. The Camels have 84 extra base hits out of 187 total (45%) while Winthrop has 81 extra base hits out of 158 (52%).

Over the last five games, Winthrop is batting .299 as a team while junior Alex White is batting .500 over that time frame with two runs, four doubles a homer and four RBI. She was named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Player of the Week this past Monday. Junior McKenzi Corn is batting .400 with seven runs and three RBI in the last five games while senior Kathryn Eberlin is batting .368 in that stretch with two runs, two doubles, a homer and six RBI.

Most of the pitching has been by sophomore Sutton Watson, who enters the game with an 11-8 record with a team-best 3.25 ERA with 17 starts and 26 appearances. Watson was 3-0 last week and has won her last two starts.

Campbell is batting .302 as a team, ranking 53rd nationally and is not only a power team, but one that has a lot of speed on the bases. The Camels are ranked 12th in the nation in steals per game at 2.03. The steals don't come from just one player as three have 12 or more and five players have eight or more.

Sophomore Ericka Nesbitt leads the Camels with a .460 batting average, but hasn't played since Mar. 19 vs. South Carolina. Sophomore Stephanie Jones is batting .392 with 26 runs, five homers and 23 RBI while freshman Courtney Klingler has a .340 average with 27 runs, nine home runs and 28 RBI. Lee leads the team with 44 RBI in 34 games played.

Freshman Courtney Roberts and senior Brittany Arnn have handled the majority of the time in the pitching circle. Roberts is 11-4 on the year with a 2.96 ERA with 16 starts, 18 appearances and 77 strikeouts to 38 walks in 90 innings. Arnn has pitched 64.2 innings sporting a record of 4-5 in eight starts, 14 appearances and 53 strikeouts to 17 walks.
