ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop softball fell 6-0 and 2-0 as it was swept by Campbell in a doubleheader, Tuesday afternoon in Big South Conference action.
Winthrop drops to 21-23 overall and is now 9-9 in the Big South as Campbell improves to 30-16 overall and 14-4 in the league.
The Eagles managed just six hits on the day as the Camel's pitching their offense in check. The Eagles did have a few chances to get runs across, but were unable to convert. It was just the third and fourth times on the season Winthrop had been shutout.
Trailing 2-0 in the second game of the twin bill, Winthrop had runners at second and third with two outs after Zharne Glover was hit by a pitch and
McKenzi Corn doubled to left center bringing up
Chelsey Schoenfeldt. However, Julia Calicutt was able to get out of the jam by forcing Schoenfeldt into a ground out to second on a hard hit ball.
It was the only inning the Eagles got a runner in scoring position as Calicutt allowed no runs on four hits with no walks and five strikeouts to improve to 7-1 on the year.
Sutton Watson started for the Eagles and tossed a complete game allowing two unearned runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts as she falls to 12-12.
Campbell's only runs of the second game came in the third inning. Shaela Churchill reached on an error and eventually scored the game-winning run on a Raven Lee infield single deep in the hole at short. Sarah Forgacs added an RBI single for the 2-0 lead with a shot to right center.
In the opening game of the day, Courtney Roberts held Winthrop to two hits with four walks and six strikeouts as she improved to 16-6. Schoenfeldt started for the Eagles and tossed a complete game allowing six runs (five earned) on 12 hits with a walk and a career-best eight strikeouts.
The Camels jumped on Winthrop in the first inning of game two for an early 3-0 lead. Stephanie Jones led off the game with a single and then stole second. Ericka Nesbitt followed with a double down the left field line for a 1-0 lead. That was followed by a single to right center by Courtney Klingler, scoring Nesbitt. The third run came on a single to short by Camise Patterson.
Patterson led off the fourth with a home run to left center to make it 4-0 and then Jones stole home for a run in the sixth followed by a Forgacs RBI single to center to complete the scoring.
Winthrop is back in action this weekend as it will face Liberty on Friday, April 19 in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Campbell heads to Radford, VA for a series at Radford beginning with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 4 p.m.
