ROCK HILL, SC— With just a few weeks remaining in Big South Conference league play, the Winthrop softball team hosts Campbell Tuesday evening at Terry Field in a key midweek doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
Winthrop sits fifth place at 9-7 in the Big South, three games behind Tuesday's foe and Coastal Carolina, which it took game three from over the weekend to avoid the sweep. A split would help the Eagles reach 10 wins, but getting both games of the doubleheader would really put the Eagles back in contention for one of the top two seeds heading down the stretch.
The Eagles (21-21) are coming off a 9-5 victory over Coastal Carolina on Sunday, which was a big win after the team blew a 6-3 lead in the top of the seventh the day before in the second game of the doubleheader and eventually lost the game in eight innings, 8-6. Sunday's win ended a four-game losing streak for the Eagles.
The season series between Winthrop and Campbell started back on April 3 in Buies Creek, NC as the Camels won 3-1 behind a three-run homer by Sarah Forgacs.
Winthrop leads the all-time series 25-11, but has lost the last five meetings with the Camels. Campbell is winners of two straight and after dropping three in a row last week. The Camels bounced back from a series-opening loss to Charleston Southern at home (5-4) to take the final two games of the series to remain atop the standings in the Big South. They sit at 28-16 overall and 12-4 in the league and have only dropped one conference series (at Coastal Carolina).
On Sunday the Eagles were able to get to Chanticleer ace Kiana Quolas for the first time in her career. Quolas entered Sunday's game having allowed four runs (two earned) in 25 innings of work against the Eagles and recording 26 strikeouts to just three walks. Winthrop knocked Quolas from the game in the second after she allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits with no walks and a strikeout. Winthrop averaged 6.2 runs per game in its five contests last week. Winthrop has used the long ball to produce a lot of runs this season, but on Sunday only two of the team's 16 hits were for extra bases.
Winthrop enters the doubleheader chasing a nine-year old record for home runs in a single-season set by the 2004 squad with 52. This year's team has 49 after
Kristy Noble hit a three-run homer on Saturday. At the pace Winthrop has hit home runs this season, the record could be reached very soon. Winthrop went without a home run in four straight games from Feb. 23 to Mar. 1, but since has not gone more than one game without a homer.
Also chasing a home run record is senior
Chelsey Schoenfeldt, who has 13 on the season, as she is just one back of the career mark of 30 set by Janiva Willis. Schoenfeldt is currently second on the team with a .345 average to go along with 28 runs and a career-high 50 RBI. She is now just 10 RBI from tying Winthrop's single-season record of 60 set by catcher Jenny Scrymgeour in 2007. It's the closest any player has been since 2007 as Mallory Hogan had 49 RBI in 2008.
In addition to her batting, Schoenfeldt has been pitching well as of late, as she was 1-0 on the weekend in two starts going a total of 13 innings. She had a three-run lead disappear in game two of the doubleheader and didn't factor into the decision.
Junior
McKenzi Corn continues to lead the team in batting with a .409 average as she looks to become the 10
th player in school history to have a .400 or better batting average in a single-season. She leads the team in runs with 36 and her 12 doubles are five shy of tying the school record of 17 set by Christine Yon in 1995.
Campbell is also a power hitting team like the Eagles and has launched 52 over fence this season in 44 games. As a team, Campbell sports the second best batting average in the league at .302 and is second in total runs at 235 (5.3 per game).
The top three batting averages on Campbell's roster are underclassmen led by sophomore Ericka Nesbitt's .402 average as she also has 31 runs and 16 stolen bases. Sophomore Stephanie Jones is batting .382 with 31 runs, six home runs and 28 RBI and is 13-for-15 on the bases. Freshman Courtney Klingler and junior Raven Lee provide the majority of the power for the Camels. Klingler is third on the team with a .344 average and has 10 home runs and 35 RBI. Lee is batting .305 with 14 home runs and 48 RBI.
Freshman Courtney Roberts leads the pitching staff as she is 15-6 on the year and has tossed 122 of the team's 283.1 innings. She's tossed 14 complete games with two shutouts, sporting a 3.27 ERA and has 107 strikeouts to 41 walks. She allowed just one run on three hits with three walks and nine strikeouts in the first meeting against Winthrop. She has lost two of her last three starts, but has been impressive in league games with a 2.60 ERA, 8-1 record and 59 strikeouts to 18 walks in 59.1 innings.
Three of Campbell's four league losses this year have come on the road where the team is 4-5 on the year and 8-10 in games away from Buies Creek.
