ROCK HILL, SC—The softball team will welcome Presbyterian College to Terry Field this weekend for a three-game Big South Conference series beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at 4 p.m. The series will wrap-up on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Winthrop has won three straight after sweeping a road series at Charleston Southern last weekend and is now 16-14 on the year and 4-2 in the Big South. Presbyterian College enters the game at 15-15 overall and 1-3 in the league. Winthrop has matched its total wins from the 2011 and 2012 seasons and has already surpassed last year's total wins in the Big South.
The all-time series is tied at 7-7 with the Blue Hose having won the last six meetings, including a three-game sweep of the Eagles in 2012 by outscoring them 21-12.
Winthrop is 4-1 in its last five games and has been smashing the ball at the plate, having scored 36 runs in the five-game stretch with a .299 team batting average. Senior
Chelsey Schoenfeldt has a .500 average with four runs and eight RBI over the last five games while sophomore
Kristy Noble has four runs and seven RBI. During that stretch, junior
McKenzi Corn is batting .400 with five runs and three RBI.
Last weekend at Charleston Southern the Eagles were minus senior
Teja Durante in the doubleheader on the final day of the series, but freshman Zharne Glover stepped in and was an instant factor. She went 2-for-5 with two runs in the lead-off spot in the first game and then followed that up by going 1-for-4 and scoring the first run of the game in a 4-3 win. Senior
Kathryn Eberlin broke out of a 1-for-34 slump in the final game of the series with the Bucs as she was 3-for-4 with a solo home run that tied the game at 2-2. She finished the doubleheader with three RBI.
Schoenfeldt is in the midst of chasing some offensive records and milestones as she is now tied for second all-time in school history with 25 home runs. She now has 114 RBI, which ranks sixth and has 70 walks which ranks third all-time (five behind
Megan Chapman in 2
nd). She's enjoying one of her best offensive seasons as she has set career-highs in runs (23), home runs (9) and RBI (36). She enters the game with a .341 average and in nine career games against PC she's batting .267 with four runs, three RBI, two doubles and a home run.
Noble in her first ever action against the Blue Hose in 2012 went 5-for-9 (.556) with three runs and three RBI in three games. Corn is 5-for-12 with two runs and two RBI life time against PC.
Sophomore
Sutton Watson missed a little bit of action over the last week, but returned in top form on the weekend at Charleston Southern as she earned wins in both games of the doubleheader at Charleston Southern. She started the first game and tossed a complete game for the win and earned the win in the second game in relief. In the two games she combined for 10.2 innings allowing three runs on 10 hits with two walks and 13 strikeouts. She is now 10-8 on the year with a 3.54 ERA and has 78 strikeouts to 28 walks.
In Watson's absence, freshman Dallas King threw well as she earned a win vs. Appalachian State by tossing five innings allowing three earned runs on eight hits with no walks and two strikeouts. She then tossed three innings in a five inning 7-2 victory over CSU as she allowed one run on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts. She was forced to leave the game with an injury, but the five strikeouts tied a career-best in a single outing.
PC is coming off a 10-4 victory over Gardner-Webb to earn its first league victory of the season. The Blue Hose opened up league play at Liberty and were swept with two one-run losses and a two-run loss. After playing three games at Winthrop this weekend, PC will have played eight of nine on the road.
Offensively the Blue Hose entered the week batting .279 as a team and scoring 5.28 runs per game (ranking 65
th nationally). That number increased after the Blue Hose scored 10 runs on 11 hits against the Runnin' Bulldogs on Wednesday.
PC hits with a lot of power as the offense has 39 doubles and 29 home runs. Three players have 23 or more RBI on the season led by Shelby Petik with 27 as she also leads the team with nine home runs. Kirby Legacki, who had three RBI in the win over Gardner-Webb, is second on the team with 25 while Erin Ruff has 23 RBI. Ruff leads the team with a .375 batting average and also has 22 runs.
In the pitching circle, the Blue Hose have used five different pitchers on the year with all of them at least tossing 17 innings. Kensley Loudermelk has the most action by far with 95.1 innings as she's 9-7 with a 3.82 ERA and 68 strikeouts to 40 walks. She earned all three wins in the Blue Hose sweep of the Eagles in 2012.
To this point in the season, PC and Winthrop only have one common opponent as PC split a doubleheader at North Carolina A&T 0-6, 12-2 while the Eagles defeated the Aggies at home, 10-2.
