N. CHARLESTON, SC—
Chelsey Schoenfeldt's three-run homer highlighted a four-run fourth inning that propelled Winthrop to a 7-2 victory in five innings over Charleston Southern, Saturday evening at the CSU Softball Field.

The game was called after five innings due to darkness as the Eagles even their season record to 14-14 overall and are 2-2 in the league. Charleston Southern falls to 5-23 overall and 0-4 in the Big South. The two teams will attempt to play a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. as thunderstorms are forecasted.

The difference in the game was the top of the fourth inning as Winthrop posted four runs to break a 1-1 tie. The inning was highlighted by an RBI single from McKenzi Corn and a three-run homer off the bat of Schoenfeldt. It was her ninth home run of the season and 25th of her career as she moved into a tie for second all-time in Winthrop history.

Marci Christian gave Charleston Southern the early 1-0 lead as she homered with two outs on a 2-2 pitch that she knocked to center field.

“Dallas King threw a really nice ball game and then got hurt so I brought Bradlee Holeman in and she did a nice job and Sutton Watson came in and slammed the door on them,” said Winthrop head coach Mark Cooke.  "Chelsey hit a three-run bomb that changed the game."

Winthrop tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Alex White with the bases loaded. It was the second time in the first three innings the Eagles loaded the bases. White added her fourth home run of the season as she led off the fifth inning with a solo shot to center for a 6-2 lead.

King earned the win in the pitching circle as she tossed three innings allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts as she improves to 4-1 on the year. Holeman tossed a hitless and scoreless fourth inning while Watson finished off the fifth inning allowing a hit and striking out one.

Jennifer Giles suffered the loss for Charleston Southern as she allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits with five walks and three strikeouts in five innings of work.

Schoenfeldt finished the day 1-for-2 with three RBI while Corn finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Jenna Harbin also scored two runs on the day as she was 1-for-1.
