JACKSONVILLE, FL – The Winthrop lacrosse team struggled offensively Friday as the Eagles fell 24-6 on the road to the Jacksonville University Dolphins.
Winthrop fell to 5-5 on the season while Jacksonville improved to 7-3 overall.
The Eagles got off to an impressive start as freshman Shannon Gallagher netted a goal on an assist from Mary Accomando only 20 seconds into the contest to give Winthrop the 1-0 lead. The Eagles struggled following the first goal as the Dolphins scored 10 unanswered goals to go up 10-1 with 10:58 remaining in the first half.
Freshman Hayley Krause got Winthrop back on the scoreboard with 9:18 on the clock but Jacksonville followed with two more tallies. The Eagles closed the half on a positive note, as Claire Feeney and Gallagher each scored a goal in the final minute to go into the break down 12-4.
Winthrop was unable to gain any momentum from its two late goals in the first half as the Eagles were held scoreless through 26:03 of the second half before Gallagher netted her third of the game on an assist by Feeney. Freshman Danielle Ellis added one more for the Eagles just before the end on an assist from Megan Wallenhorst.
Gallagher finished with three goals on six shots. Hayley Krause finished with five draw controls while Claire Feeney also added four. Goalie Camille King finished with a season-high 14 saves. Mary Accomando finished with two assists.
Winthrop will look to rebound on Sunday when the Eagles host University of Detroit Mercy at 1 p.m. at Eagle Field.
