Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop softball split a doubleheader with Appalachian State with a 10-4 win and a 7-6 loss, Wednesday afternoon at Terry Field.

Winthrop is now 13-14 on the year while Appalachian State is 11-9. Winthrop heads to North Charleston, SC this weekend for a three-game Big South Conference series at Charleston Southern. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 23 at 2 p.m. with the final game on Sunday at 2 p.m.

"I loved how scrappy we were today,” said Winthrop head coach Mark Cooke. “I thought we played really well today, we just couldn't get the outs we needed there in the 7th of the last game. It was a good ball club we played today and we felt good the way we competed. Hats off to Appalachian State, they were very scrappy as well. We feel like things are starting to come together and I really like the way this group is growing every day.”

The Eagles captured the first game with a big sixth inning and then rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the nightcap to take a 6-5 lead into the seventh inning before falling 7-6.

Kristy Noble gave Winthrop a 6-5 lead with a bases clearing double, but was thrown out at third for the final out of the inning. Appalachian State tied the game on a double to right center by Meghan Smith and then scored the winning run on an error by Kelsey Ritter at short as she couldn't corral the ball to make the throw to first.

A three-run home run by Allie Cashion put the Mountaineers on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Appalachian State added two more runs for a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, which is when the Eagles started to rally.

Melanie Andrea got the rally going as she laced a home run to left center to make it a 5-2 deficit. Noble then singled up the middle to pull within two runs.

Sophomore Chelsey Schoenfeldt suffered the loss in the circle as she falls to 0-3 after allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Sara Allen started the game as she tossed 2.1 innings allowing four runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Alissa Scholekopf tossed a complete game to improve to 7-4 as she allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Leading 5-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning of game one, Winthrop exploded for five runs for some separation. The big hit came off the bat of Schoenfeldt as she hit her eighth home run of the season over the left field fence, a three-run shot to push the lead to 10-4. Jenna Harbin started off the inning with a lead-off walk and was replaced at first by Melanie Andrea as a pinch-runner. After Holli Ryan lined out to right, Teja Durante pulled the ball down the right field line for an RBI triple. Durante came around to score after Noble hit a line drive to center, just out of reach of shortstop Cynthia Gomez as she tried to reach out and rob Noble of the hit.

The home run by Schoenfeldt gave her five RBI in the game as she passed her single-season best in RBI of 32, which she set in 2012. She finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs

The Eagles jumped in front in the first inning as Schoenfeldt delivered a two-run single up the middle that scored Durante and Noble, who both reached after being hit.

The lead was cut in half in the top of the third as the Mountaineers scored on a sacrifice fly by Lindsay Loudermilk.

Durante and Noble each drove in a run in the fourth inning as Durante plated Harbin on a ground out and Noble singled up the middle to score Kim Ryder.

In the top of the sixth, Appalachian State cut the lead to one run as Cashion led off the inning with a home run to left. The other run came on a throwing error that allowed the runner to come around from first.

Freshman Dallas King improved to 3-1 on the year as she tossed five innings allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Freshman Bradlee Holeman tossed the final two innings allowing two hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Mountaineer starter Shivaun Landeros suffered the loss as she allowed eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits with five walks and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.
