KNOXVILLE, TN— The Winthrop softball team fell 8-0 at sixth-ranked Tennessee as its win streak came to an end at three games, Tuesday afternoon at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
Winthrop falls to 11-12 overall while the Vols improved to 22-4 as the Eagles now head to Cullowhee, NC for a doubleheader with Western Carolina on Wednesday beginning at 2 p.m.
The Lady Vols went back-to-back in the bottom of the first for an early 3-0 lead. Lauren Gibson connected on a two-run homer on a 2-1 count from
Sutton Watson and then Madison Shipman followed with a first pitch home run to left.
Leading 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, Tennessee got a one-out walk by Raven Chavanne that was followed by a double to left by Gibson. Shipman then doubled to right center, scoring both Chavanne and Gibson for a 7-0 lead and the lead extended to 8-0 after Shipman scored on a Cheyanne Tarango single.
“I think it was a better game that the score reflects,” said Winthrop head coach
Mark Cooke. “They jumped on Sutton early but I thought
Sara Allen threw the ball really good. I thought we played hard against them. It was one of those things where they were charged up ready to come get us and they did. Their pitcher threw a great game, she's one of the best in the nation.”
Winthrop defeated Tennessee 2-1 last season as the Lady Vols avenged the loss.
Ivy Renfroe improved to 9-1 on the year as she tossed 4.0 innings allowing three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Watson suffered the loss and is now 8-7 on the year as she allowed three runs on three hits without recording an out. Allen tossed 3.1 innings allowing five runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts while Dallas King tossed 0.2 innings as she struck out one-of-two batters faced.
Sophomore
Kristy Noble finished 2-for-2 at the plate while Melanie Andrea got the other hit for Winthrop.
