ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop softball team will hit the road for three games during spring break as it will put its three-game winning streak on the line at #8 Tennessee on Tuesday and then head to Western Carolina for a doubleheader on Wednesday.
The Eagles will take on the nationally-ranked Lady Vols on Tuesday in a single game at 5 p.m. and then face Western Carolina Wednesday in a doubleheader.
Winthrop captured a 5-4 victory in walk-off fashion over Harvard on Sunday to push its current win streak to three games, a season-high. The Eagles are 11-11 on the year and one of the biggest differences from the last two seasons has been the production at the plate.
A year ago the Eagles combined for 26 home runs and 142 runs en route to a 16-win season with 32 games decided by 1-2 runs. This season the Eagles already have 24 home runs through 22 games and 94 runs and are on pace to score near 200 runs by the end of the regular season if they maintain their current average of 4.3 runs a game.
Senior
Chelsey Schoenfeldt is leading the way from a power standpoint with three doubles, a triple and six home runs and has a team-high .694 slugging percentage. The two-time All-Big South selection is already closing in on career-bests for a single season in several categories such as runs, home runs, and RBI. She has reached base the last 10 games and has two or more RBI in five of the last seven games.
Junior
McKenzi Corn has exploded at the plate in the last 11 games as she has gone from a .314 average to a team-high .431 average. During that stretch she batted .531 and had 12 runs, five doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI to go along with a .969 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .605.
Over the last 11 games, Winthrop is batting .284 as a team and
Kathryn Eberlin and
Alex White have also batted over .300 during that span and driven in eight and six RBI respectively.
The team's earned run average has gone from 3.27 in the first 11 games to 4.93 over the last 11 games but the offense has kept pace and beyond.
Sophomore
Sutton Watson is the likely starter in the pitching circle on Tuesday against Tennessee as she's also made starts vs. Georgia twice, at #1 Alabama and against Virginia. Watson is 8-6 on the year with a 3.36 ERA and nine complete games (two shutouts) and 64 strikeouts to 24 walks in 83.1 innings of work.
The Eagles are 1-3 all-time against Tennessee with the only victory coming last season in a 2-1 win that gave Winthrop head coach
Mark Cooke his 700
th career victory. Tennessee is coming off a series win over #1/2 Alabama and has won seven of its last eight games. The Lady Vols are 24-4 on the year and a perfect 4-0 against Big South Conference teams having defeated Charleston Southern 10-3 and 8-1 and Coastal Carolina 10-3 and 8-0.
On Wednesday the Eagles take on a Western Carolina team that is 6-13 on the year and coming off a 13-4 win over Appalachian State on Sunday. Winthrop is 5-1 all-time against the Catamounts, who are 2-1 against Big South schools with two wins over Charleston Southern and a loss to Coastal Carolina.
