ROCK HILL, SC— McKenzi Corn hit a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Winthrop to a 5-4 victory over Harvard, Saturday afternoon at Terry Field on the final day of the Winthrop/adidas Invitational.
Winthrop evened its record at 11-11 with the win while Harvard is now 3-6.
Corn stepped up with one out after
Kristy Noble had grounded out to second on a full count and belted an 0-2 pitch over the fence in left center. It was her first career walk-off homer and two of her three home runs this season have come in the seventh inning.
Winthrop had taken a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the third as
Chelsey Schoenfeldt delivered an RBI single to right field, scoring Noble. Schoenfeldt moved to second on the throw home and Corn had already reached third on the single.
Kathryn Eberlin grounded out to the pitcher and then Corn tried to score as she made a wide slide around the backside of the plate but Appelbe was able to make the tag for the out. Schoenfeldt moved to third on the play and eventually scored on a wild pitch that walked
Alex White in the process.
Once again Harvard answered back with two runs in the top of the fourth as Andrea Del Conte loaded the bases on a bunt single with one out. Shelbi Olsen singled to second, but Noble's throw to first was errant and two runs came around to score. Galindo scored on the single, but Appelbe was able to score from second on the error.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning by taking advantage of a fielding mistake by the Crimson. Harvard's centerfielder dropped a fly ball for the third out that allowed Corn and Noble to come around and score as they were running on contact.
Harvard came right back and tied the game in the top of the second. The first run came on a steal as Adrienne Humme took off for second base and when the throw was made to try and catch her stealing, Zoe Galindo took off and scored. Katherine Appelbe tied the game on an RBI single to right center.
Sophomore
