WASHINGTON, DC – The Winthrop women's lacrosse team started its inaugural season on a very positive note by doubling up the Howard University Bison 20-10 Friday.
Howard hit quickly to start the game, netting a goal in only 23 seconds. Winthrop had to quickly settle down and regroup and the Eagles' first-ever goal came from the stick of freshman Megan Wallenhorst with 22:01 left in the first half.
The Bison went back up 2-1 with 19:29 left, but that was the last lead that Howard held. Freshman Hayley Krause knotted the game at 2-2 with 12:21 remaining in the opening half and then the flood gates started to open for the Winthrop offense.
Freshman Danielle Ellis and Krause scored two goals around a tally from sophomore Alyssa Blevins to put the Eagles up 5-2 with just under seven minutes on the clock. Sophomore Mary Accomando, and freshman Taylor Moreau scored goals along with a second from Wallenhorst to put the Eagles up 8-2. Howard scored its third goal of the game with 2:16 left to make it 8-3 heading into the break.
Junior Maddi Genovese got the scoring going in the second half and Winthrop's offense continued to pound the Howard net. Krause forced a running clock as she netted a goal, putting the Eagles up 17-7. Freshman Logan McCarthy got on the score sheet, giving Winthrop its largest lead of the game at 19-8 as the Eagles went on to win 20-10.
Hayley Krause finished the match with five goals while Megan Wallenhorst and Maddi Genovese each added four tallies. Freshman goalie Camille King gave up 10 goals while making 12 saves.
