Softball Opens 2013 At Red & Black Showcase Beginning Saturday

Winthrop Faces Ohio State Twice, Elon and 9th-Ranked Georgia

ROCK HILL, SC—The softball team will open the 2013 season at the Red & Black Showcase hosted by the University of Georgia this weekend.

Winthrop opens up on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. as it faces Ohio State and will then face Elon at 5:30 p.m. On Sunday the Lady Eagles will play Ohio State again at 10 a.m. and then conclude the showcase against ninth-ranked Georgia. Winthrop is 0-1 all-time against Ohio State, 13-7 against Elon and 2-15 all-time against Georgia.

In 2012, Winthrop opened the season with a 3-1 victory over Cleveland State and has won its last two season openers.

Winthrop returns seven starters from a team that went 16-39 last season and is looking to get the team back to its winning ways. The Lady Eagles are led by two-time All-Big South First Team selection Chelsey Schoenfeldt and junior outfielder McKenzi Corn as the top two offensive returners. Other returning starters include senior Kathryn Eberlin (2011 All-Big South), senior Mel Andrea, junior Alex White, sophomore Kristy Noble and senior Teja Durante.

Last season, Ohio State finished at 31-23 last season and an RPI of 89. Elon was 24-27 with a 194 RPI while Georgia had a 45-17 record and a 13 RPI as well as finishing the season ranked 8th.
