ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team will hit Eagle Field Friday evening at 6 p.m. and make more history, hosting the first-ever lacrosse match against the Marquette Golden Eagles.
Winthrop comes into the match with a 1-1 overall record after defeating Howard 20-10 in the team's inaugural contest before falling to Navy.
Marquette is also a first-year program and Friday's contest will be the inaugural game for the Golden Eagles.
Freshman Hayley Krause has been an early offensive power for the Eagles, netting five goals in two games to go along with one assist. Fellow freshmen Megan Wallenhorst and Maddi Genovese each have scored four goals while Wallenhorst has also added three assists.
Krause and Wallenhorst each earned Big South weekly honors for their weekend performance. Krause was named the Choice Hotels Big South Women's Lacrosse Attacking Player of the Week while Wallenhorst was tabbed as the Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.
Marquette also boasts a very young team with 28 freshmen, three sophomores, one junior and one senior. The Golden Eagles have only two players on the roster with previous NCAA lacrosse playing experience.
There will be giveaways and special promotions for this historic event for all fans. A special opening ceremony to introduce the entire team and commemorate the evening will start approximately 5:45 p.m. Friday evening.
Friday's contest starts a string of three straight at home for the Eagles. Winthrop will next host St. Bonaventure at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 24.
