ROCK HILL, SC—
The softball team is back in action this weekend as it heads a little north to Spartanburg, SC for the Firehouse Subs Spartan Invitational hosted by USC Upstate.

The tournament is Friday-Sunday, but the Lady Eagles will play their four games the first two days beginning with George Mason at noon followed by a game at 4 p.m. against Samford on Friday. Saturday the Lady Eagles will take on the host Spartans at 2 p.m. and then face Bowling Green at 6 p.m. All of the games will be played at Cyrill Stadium.

Winthrop is off to a 1-3 start after a difficult opening weekend at the Red and Black Showcase at Georgia last weekend. The season didn't start off the way Winthrop had hoped, falling 17-5 in the opener to Ohio State. However, things turned around quickly and the Eagles knocked off Elon 4-1, after the Phoenix had defeated eighth-ranked Georgia. Following the opening loss to Ohio State, Winthrop went 1-2, but posted an ERA of 2.03.

Senior Chelsey Schoenfeldt, sophomore Kelsey Ritter and freshman Haley Zuehlke each recorded four hits during the first weekend of play. Schoenfeldt was very impressive at the plate batting .500 and drawing six walks with no strikeouts for an on-base percentage of .714. Schoenfeldt led the team with four runs, two home runs and tied in RBI with five. She surpasses the 80 RBI mark in her career and has now scored over 50 runs (51). Ritter had just three hits all of last season.

Winthrop opponents on the weekend have a combined 7-6 with USC Upstate off to a perfect 4-0 start after opening with a tournament at home last weekend. George Mason won its season opener against Charleston Southern, 2-1, but then dropped the next three games (two by one run). Samford enters the weekend 2-3 after opening at a tournament at South Florida. Two of the three losses for Samford were to Top 15 teams (Michigan and USF). This will be the opening weekend for Bowling Green.

All-time the Eagles are 11-5 against George Mason, 0-2 against Samford, 1-4 against USC Upstate and 2-1 against Bowling Green.
