ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Winthrop lacrosse team ran into a very tough Navy team, as the Eagles fell 23-4 on the road to the Mids Sunday.
Winthrop dropped its record to 1-1 overall with the loss as Navy opened its season with the victory.
The Eagles were under a constant barrage from the Mids as Navy fired off 37 total shots including 25 in the first half to the Eagles' 12.
Navy jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Eagles got on the scoreboard as freshman Megan Wallenhorst netted her fifth goal of the season with 22:24 left in the first half. Winthrop was unable to gain any momentum off the goal as Navy scored 10 unanswered goals.
Freshman Shannon Gallagher scored her first career goal with 6:45 left in the first half. Danielle Ellis recorded her second assist of the season on the tally. The Eagles trailed 16-2 at the half.
Winthrop looked to stay competitive in the second half. Freshman Hayley Krause scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season less than four minutes into the second half on a free-position attempt to make the score 17-3. With just over three minutes remaining freshman Logan McCarthy scored her second goal of the season on another free-position attempt as the Eagles fell 23-4.
The Eagles were unable to get their offense going as the Mids owned the center circle, earning 20 draw controls to Winthrop's nine. The Eagles also struggled with turnovers, committing 12.
Winthrop will return to action on Friday when the Eagles host the first-ever lacrosse game on Winthrop's campus. The Eagles will host Marquette at 6 p.m. at Eagle Field.
