ROCK HILL, SC- The No. 4 Winthrop women's soccer team advanced 4-3 in penalty kicks over No. 5 Coastal Carolina in Saturday's Quarterfinal match of the 2013 Big South Conference Tournament presented by Musco Lighting. Winthrop advances to next Friday's semi-final match against No. 1 Radford in Conway, SC.
Goalkeeper
Amelia Henderson made a career high 14 saves and two saves in the penalty shootout to lead the Lady Eagles to their eighth Big South quarterfinal victory.
The first half was filled with action with both teams putting up nine shots in the first 45 minutes. Most of Winthrop's chances were blocked by the Coastal defense while Winthrop goalkeeper
Amelia Henderson made four saves in the first half to keep the game level. Coastal had a chance to go up in the 25
th minute when freshman Briana Panico played a ball across the face of goal to a wide open Fia Jonsson, but Winthrop defender
Lauren Watts cleared the ball before it reached Jonsson.

Coastal midfielder Kacey Kelley put a shot on goal in the 62
nd minute that was initially saved by Henderson then went into the goal but a foul was called on Coastal and the goal was disallowed.

Coastal Carolina elected to take the kick off in the first over time and put the pressure on Winthrop's defense. Coastal's Sam Patterson received a yellow card in the 100
th minute and junior
Krystyna Freda's resulting free kick was a line drive just under the cross bar but goalkeeper Megan Spencer managed to get her fingertips to it and hit it over the crossbar. Coastal had a slight lead in shots at the end of regular with 18 to Winthrop's 16.

The second overtime period ended with Coastal making five shots and three corner kicks in the last five minutes, but Winthrop weathered the storm and the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

Winthrop and Coastal each converted their first three penalty kicks;

Tori Davis and
Ashley Herndon took the shots for Winthrop while Darbie Kelley, Fia Jonsson and Kacey Kelley took Coastal's. Winthrop went up 4-3 when
Taylor Walton put her shot away and Henderson made a save on Brianna Panico's kick. Freda had a chance for the game-winning shot for Winthrop but it was saved by Spencer. Sam Patterson stepped up and took the final kick for Coastal and it looked to be going in but Henderson blocked it to give Winthrop the win.

Spencer Smith said he was extremely proud of his team. "I thought we played with great intensity for the whole 110 minutes, it was a good team effort. There's a good team in Coastal Carolina, and it's a great way to advance."
