CONWAY, SC— The Winthrop men's soccer team's season came to an end Tuesday evening with a 2-1 loss to top-seeded Coastal Carolina in the first round of the 2013 Big South Men's Soccer Championship.
Winthrop ends the season at 11-7-1 overall while Coastal Carolina advances to Friday's semifinals and is now 15-4 overall.
"I thought it was a heck of a game," said Winthrop head coach
Rich Posipanko. "Defensive mistakes and missed opportunities have haunted us all season and it was no different tonight having a defensive lapse and missing a golden opportunity. At the end of the day Coastal was the better team and we wish them the best this weekend."
Like the first meeting of the season, Winthrop jumped out to a 1-0 lead as
Kyle Kennedy scored his first collegiate goal in the 24
th minute. The goal came off a corner kick as
Patrick Barnes delivered the ball into the box and it was headed down by
Adam Brundle. The ball bounced around in front and Kennedy ripped the ball into the back of the net from just outside the six.
Coastal Carolina's Sergio Carmargo scored both goals as he was on the fortunate end on each. The first goal tied the game in the 27
th minute just moments after the Eagles took the lead. Pedro Ribeiro let a shot fly from about 30 yards out that was blocked by a Winthrop defender. The ball deflected in the air keeping momentum going forward and sailed over the top of the Winthrop defense where Carmargo settled it, turned and placed the ball into the low corner for his sixth on the year.
Carmargo netted his seventh goal in the 61
st minute when a diagonal ball was played out of the back by Shawn McLaws with the wind at his back. It was misjudged by a Winthrop defender as the ball dipped and bounced under his foot as he tried to clear it and right to Carmargo, who took a touch and slotted the ball into the lower right corner.
The final 20 minutes of the game favored the Eagles as they pressed hard into the strong wind for the equalizer. Winthrop continued to play the ball wide and serve it into the box but Coastal Carolina continued to clear or able to block most of the shot attempts after loose balls. Winthrop not only fought the Chanticleers on the field but had to deal with a very strong head wind that picked up at the start of the second half and got stronger as the game went on.
The best opportunity for Winthrop came in the 69
th minute on a counter when
Achille Obougou set up
Adriano Negri behind the defense for a one-on-one with goalkeeper Devin Cook, but his low shot inside the box missed wide left.
Winthrop goalkeeper
Fabian Broich made four saves as he finishes the year at 2-4 while his counterpart Cook finished with one save. Broich came up big in the 33
rd minute when he was able to save a point-blank shot from eight yards out straight on by Ribeiro that kept the game tied until the 61
st minute.
This was the 10
th meeting all-time in the Big South Conference Tournament as Coastal now leads 5-4-1.
