ROCK HILL, SC—
In a hard fought match the Winthrop men's soccer team fell just short in a 2-1 loss to Campbell, Tuesday night in Big South Conference action at Eagle Field.

The loss is the second straight for the Eagles as they fall to 7-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big South. Campbell improves to 2-6-2 overall and remains perfect in the league at 2-0.

"At the end of the night the injuries and personnel we had on the field were not a factor," said Winthrop head coach Rich Posipanko. "We did ourselves in with two mistakes and missing numerous scoring opportunities we had."

Trailing 2-0 at the half, Winthrop tried to get back into the match and nearly did in the 57th minute when Max Hasenstab hit the post on a shot just at the top of the box. The ball bounced across the mouth of the goal as Adriano Negri followed but had too much pace for Negri to make good contact or settle it and the shot just sailed over the crossbar with the net open.

Mason Lavallet finally got the Eagles on the board in the 65th minute as he headed home a rebound off a Magnus Thorsson shot. Thorsson hit a shot with pace from about 30 yards out and was curving as Ethan Hall jumped up to make the save. However, Hall's momentum was taking him inside the goal so he was forced to drop the ball in front of him and Lavallet ran in front and beat him to the ball for the goal.

Winthrop had most of the possession in the first half and created several scoring chances going forward but it was Campbell that found the back of the net twice. Following a blocked free kick on the other end, Campbell caught the Eagles defense asleep in a counter attack that led to Pepe Rangel headed toward goal straight down the middle of the field. Before Rangel reached the 18-yard box his touch got away from him and Cody Winter came through and cleared the ball but another Winthrop defender collided with Rangel and the Camels were awarded the penalty in the 32nd minute. Justin Franz converted on the penalty beating Guilherme Avelar to his right as Avelar guessed left.

The second goal came right before half as Campbell took advantage of a counter attack. Winthrop had possession and was pressing offensively but a giveaway near midfield had Campbell going the other way with Reafe Anderson dribbling down the middle of the field as he played the ball ahead of Rangel and he took and touch and beat Avelar low to the far corner from just inside the 18-yard box.

Winthrop finished with a 17-15 edge in shots as Avelar finished with seven saves and Hall recorded four.

Winthrop is back on the road for its next contest as it travels to Lynchburg, VA on Saturday, Oct. 12 to take on Liberty at 2 p.m. Campbell will be back in action on Saturday as well when it hosts Radford at 7 p.m.
