HIGH POINT, NC—
Senior Achille Obougou's goal in the 33rd minute lifted Winthrop to a 1-0 victory at High Point, Saturday evening in Big South Conference men's soccer action.

The win ends a four-game losing streak for the Eagles as they improve to 8-4-1 on the year and 2-3 in the Big South. High Point falls to 4-7-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the league. The win also ended a streak of three straight losses to the Panthers as Winthrop shutout the Panthers for the first time since Nov. 15, 2007 in the Big South Conference Tournament.

Obougou notched his sixth goal of the season in the 33rd minute when Mason Lavallet found him alone in front of the net and Obougou calmly placed a shot into the lower left corner from about eight yards out straight away from goal. Lavallet had just subbed into the match and received a bouncing pass inside the 18-yard box, then flicked the ball over a High Point defender as the ball landed right at the feet of Obougou.

"We're just happy to get a conference win and keep us in the thick of things," said Winthrop head coach Rich Posipanko. "Pretty happy with the win considering everything that's happen over the last few weeks. We're starting to get some people back and hopefully in a game or two we'll be back to full strength. Thought defensively with what we had in there tonight we did well defending with some new people in there."

Outside of the goal by Obougou, the Eagles only other good scoring chance of the first half came in the 43rd minute off the head of Magnus Thorsson. Max Hasenstab's corner kick was long and collected by Lavallet, who then made a move and delivered a service right to the head of Thorsson. The header was down and at the feet of High Point keeper Kody Palmer as he dropped down quickly and hung on to the ball for the save.

High Point had a great chance to tie the match in the final minute of the first half when a ball was played to Mamadee Nyepon right in front of goal, but his shot sailed over the crossbar.

Obougou nearly had his second goal of the game in the 52nd minute when he nearly made the Panthers pay for a turnover at midfield. The ball was won by the Eagles and Obougou received the ball and broke free toward the final defender. Obougou made a move and set himself up on his left foot as the shot was hit solid toward the open part of the goal but Palmer reached out as he slid in toward Obougou and made the save.

Sophomore Fabian Broich, who entered the game in the 31st minute, came up with a good save in the 64th minute when Nyepon took a pass off his chest and then let a left-footed shot fly from the top of the box as Broich got down to make the save.

In the 66th minute, the Eagles countered as Adam Brundle set up Hasenstab behind the defense and instead of taking a shot he played the ball across the mouth of the goal trying to find Obougou in front of an open goal but the ball was cleared away at the last second by a High Point defender. Two minutes later Jordi Lluch delivered a ball right in front that Thorsson nearly flicked by Palmer right in front but couldn't get it by Palmer.

The Panthers looked for the tie in the 79th minute when Nyepon played a ball wide to Chris Ramsell who struck a shot one-time as Broich stood tall and turned the shot away to keep the slate clean.

Brundle nearly made it 2-0 in the 81st minute when his shot from 20 yards straight on banged off the crossbar and was cleared away. Hasenstab played a ball toward the middle of the field across the middle of the field to Thorsson, who then played a square ball to Brundle as he struck it first time.

Avelar made one save before exiting the game late in the first half but still gets the win as Broich did an excellent job making four saves to help the Eagles earn their 4th shutout of the season. Palmer finished with four saves.
