ROCK HILL, SC—
The Winthrop softball team will look to build momentum off its series victory at Liberty last weekend when it heads to Buies Creek, NC for a doubleheader Thursday evening against Campbell.

The Eagles continue the three-game series with the Camels that started on March 22 in a 5-4 loss in which the team led 4-3 through three innings, but couldn't hold on.

Winthrop enters the double-header with a 13-22 record overall and a 2-5 mark in the Big South as the team needs to win both games to keep pace in the league race. Campbell is 17-18 on the year and 2-2 in the league after dropping its first series of the season at home against Radford.

The Eagles welcomed back senior shortstop Megan Chapman last weekend, who left the first inning of the first meeting against Campbell after injuring her leg trying to beat out a grounder to first. Chapman missed the rest of the Campbell game, the entire series with Charleston Southern and the midweek game at home against South Carolina.

Chapman, who is second on the team with a .326 average after the weekend, was 1-for-8 at the plate in the Liberty series but was perfect in the field with three putouts and five assists. Now that she's returned to the line-up, the watch is on as she approaches 100 career runs (92).

Junior Chelsey Schoenfeldt, who was named the Big South Conference Player of the Week on Monday, continues to lead the way offensively for the Eagles. She's batting a team-high .374 with 11 runs, six doubles, four home runs and a team-high 23 RBI. At Liberty, Schoefneldt was 5-for-9 and is batting .421 in seven league games.

Sophomore Alex White has the team's longest hitting streak at the moment at four games as she's picked up her offense in conference play with a .316 average and three RBI.

It was nearly a three-win weekend for sophomore pitcher Natalie Becker as she factored in all three decisions at Liberty. The lefty opened up with an impressive three-hit shutout on Friday in game one at Liberty as she had nine strikeouts to four walks in seven innings. It was the fifth time this season Becker had recorded nine or more strikeouts in an appearance. She then picked up the win in relief in game two of the series as she tossed 2.2 innings allowing no runs on one hit with no walks and two strikeouts. Then in the final game of the series, Becker had a 3-2 lead slip away in the bottom of the seventh inning in a 4-3 loss.

It was the Eagles eighth one-run loss of the season and Winthrop is now 11-10 this season in games decided by two runs or less.

Campbell has played very little since defeating Winthrop on March 22. After the win, the Camels were off until the 28th when they traveled to North Carolina and suffered a 9-0 defeat. Campbell followed that up with the home series with Radford.

The Camels are led by a young group of players as freshman Ericka Nesbitt leads the team in batting at .376 with 20 runs, a .438 on-base percentage and 10 stolen bases. Nesbitt is averaging .462 in league games.

Freshman Stephanie Jones is batting .336 with 19 runs, nine doubles, four homers and tied for the team lead with 25 RBI. Senior Taylor McGee has provided the biggest pop this season with eight home runs and 22 RBI with a .280 average.

During league play, Sophomore Raven Lee has a .364 average and six RBI as Campbell is still one of the top offenses in the league (2nd in team average, 2nd in runs scored).

In the circle, Julia Callicutt has a team-low ERA of 2.12 with a 5-4 record on the year while junior Brittany Arnn has the most appearances and starts as she's sporting a 3.57 ERA with a 7-7 record. It was sophomore Olivia Scarborough that came in relief in the first meeting to shut down the Eagles offensively allowing just two hits over the final 4.1 innings. She's now 2-1 on the year with a 1.31 ERA in six appearances. She tossed six strong innings against Radford in the final game of the series allowing three runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in the loss.

Winthrop leads the all-time series 25-7 and is 19-5 against Campbell in league games.
